Vanessa Shehane Greer

Vanessa Shehane Greer age 63 of Rockwood and a native of DeKalb County, passed away Thursday evening at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, TN.  She was born November 7, 1954 to her parents, the late Robert Lee and Louise Pedigo Shehane.  She was a homemaker and member of the Town Creek Old Fashioned Missionary Baptist Church.  Survivors include 3 children, Kenny (Jennifer) Greer, Rhonda (Stephen) Greer and Josh (Renee) Greer all of Lebanon; 11 grandchildren, Katie and Kayla Greer, Kasey (Ethan) Jenkins, Dalton Squires, Kane and Kenzie Greer, Hunter McKoin, Gracie, Jada and Gary Owens and Cole Borcherding; 3 great-grandchildren, Addison, Jayden and Hunter Greer; Father of her children, Kenneth Greer, Sr. of Lebanon; 3 brothers, Wayne (Jean) Shehane of Smithville, Tommy (Rita) Shehane of McMinnville, Miles (Tabby) Shehane of Smithville; 1 sister, Lucy Russell of McMinnville; special nephew, Rychi Watson; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Buster Drenan officiating and burial will follow in Whorton Springs Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be Monday 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Tuesday 10:AM until the time of the service at 2 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.  



Violet Jo Domanski

Yorktown, VA—Violet Jo Cantrell Hall Domanski, 93, passed away peacefully October 17, 2018 at the Dominion Village at Poquoson assisted living and memory care facility after a 12-year battle with dementia. Jo was born August 20, 1925, in the Keltonburg community of DeKalb County, TN; graduated from DeKalb County High School in 1944; and then lived in Detroit, MI from 1944 until she moved to Virginia in May of 2011. Jo was a member of the First Baptist Church located at 16428 Nine Mile Road, Eastpointe, MI.

Jo worked in the Detroit automotive industry where she met her first husband, Elmer Bell Hall, from Silver Point, TN. Jo and Elmer were married July 15, 1950 and shared their experiences and enthusiasm for life with many friends and family prior to his death, July 14, 1975. Later, Jo married Fredrick Domanski on May 12, 1990 with the wedding ceremony being performed by her late nephew, Rev. Bill Lassiter. Jo and Fred enjoyed traveling extensively during their retirement years prior to Fred’s death, October 31, 2005.

Jo was a loved and loving individual that brought a high level of commitment and joy to family and friends. Her positive and uplifting personality leaves an indelible memory for those that were fortunate to have known her.

Jo is the last surviving member of her immediate family which included her parents Walter Hamilton Cantrell and Eva Hennessee Cantrell and five siblings: Lorene Judkins (Willie), Hilda Lassiter (Ernest), Wilma Moss (Beecher), James Cantrell, and Homer Cantrell. Jo is survived by four nieces and nephews: Nadene Judkins Hostettler (Arlington, TX), James Moss (Yorktown, VA), Bill Moss (Goodlettsville, TN), and Jo Ann Moss Hess (Rio Vista, CA).

In addition to family, Jo had many friends in MI, and this was particularly the case for the close and long relationship she had with the family of the late Kenneth and Maxine Carey and their two daughters and families: Barbara Pierce (Printess) of Macomb, MI and Mary King (Harry) of Spring Hill, TN. Also, acknowledgment is made of the loving care and help provided by her neighbors, Denice and Otis Keith, during Jo’s earlier stages of dementia and the subsequent care by the Dominion Village staff at both Williamsburg and Poquoson, VA.

A graveside service will be conducted at the DeKalb Memorial Gardens in Smithville by Rev. Bill Robertson at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 27, and Violet Jo’s cremated remains will be interred adjacent to that of her first husband, Elmer Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Justin Potter Library in Smithville, TN or the charity of your choice in memory of Mrs. Domanski.




Neil Dudney

Neil Dudney age 86 of Smithville passed away Tuesday evening, October 16, 2018 at Select Specialty Hospital in Nashville. Neil was born October 5, 1932 in Jackson County, to his parents, the late John Lyman and Ruby Mae Birdwell Dudney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe Lester Dudney and Charles Clark Dudney. He graduated from Jackson County High School and received a BS in Agriculture from Tennessee Tech University. His first job with the government was a substitute rural mail carrier for 5 years with the Gainesboro Post Office. In 1957, he began work with the USDA Soil Conservation Services in Linden, TN. He later transferred to Lawrenceburg and then to Wartburg, TN. While working in Wartburg, he married Emma Jean Wilmoth on January 6, 1962 and they became parents of twin girls, Janet and Susan. Neil was transferred to Smithville in August 1967 working as District Conservationist. In 1979 he received a certificate of merit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for outstanding performance of duties, one of only two given in the state. In 1987 he retired from the Soil Conservation Service after 30 years. He has been involved in other areas of the community through the years. He served as a member of the Board of Tourism, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Center Hill Academy and Lions Club. He helped make major improvements to Green Brook Park in 1979 and helped establish the Smithville Day School. Neil has been a member of the Church of Christ since being baptized at the Whitleyville Church of Christ in 1948. Since being in Smithville, he has served as a deacon for 12 years and an elder for 18 years at the Smithville Church of Christ. He was very involved with the Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree from the beginning in 1972, where he began as a sound technician and later served as the President/Coordinator for 16 years until 2008. Mr. Neil Dudney was a man that loved God, family and community and dedicated himself to all three. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 56 years, Emma Jean Wilmoth Dudney of Smithville; twin daughters, Janet (Brian) England of Smithville and Susan (Brian) Berry of Cookeville; four grandchildren, Dr. Laura England (Brandon) Ross, Brandon (Sara) Shaw, Ethan (Rachel) Shaw and Dylan Shaw; two great-grandsons, Carson Shaw and Charles Ross; sister-in-law, Frances Dudney Crowder; niece, Linda Dudney and nephew, John Dudney. Funeral services will be conducted 1 PM Friday, October 19, 2018 at the Smithville Church of Christ with Bro. Dan Gulley officiating and burial will follow at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday 4 PM until 8 PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel and Friday 11 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM at the Smithville Church of Christ. In addition to flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Church of Christ Disaster Relief Fund or to the Smithville Church of Christ Work Camp. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Charles Michael Blanchfield

35 year old Charles Michael Blanchfield of Smithville passed away Saturday at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital. He was a carpenter. Survivors include a son, Cannon Abel Blanchfield and Fiance Becca Johnson and parents, Charles and Dimple Murphy Blanchfield all of Dowelltown. Sister, Kimberly Ann Blanchfield and Trenton Pedigo of Dowelltown. Niece Sadie Meyer. Nephews, Geoff and Nick Meyer of Dowelltown.  Niece and nephews, Lillian Pedigo, Aidan Layne, Landon, and Paylan Pedigo all of Dowelltown. A sister, Heather and Dan Meyer of California.  Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




Joyce Saylors Farless

Joyce Saylors Farless age 76, passed away at her daughter’s residence in McMinnville Saturday morning. She was born March 1, 1942 to her late parents, James Oscar and Nellie Elizabeth Braswell Saylors. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers, James Olan Saylors, and Clarence Auburn Saylors; sisters, Ruby Nell Ferrell, and Glema King. Ms. Farless was a retired factory worker and was affiliated with the Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Rita Lanier of McMinnville, Kathy Dye of McMinnville, Jeffery McClaran of Kentucky, Lori Jones of Colorado, and Dori Perry of Ind.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Ms. Farless will be held on Tuesday October 16, 2018 at 2:PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial to follow in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday 11:AM until the time of the service at 2:PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




Pamela Sue McKeown

October 11, 2018

54 year old Pamela Sue McKeown of Dowelltown passed away Wednesday at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. She was a cook. The family has chosen direct cremation and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Arnold John McKeown, Sr. and parents, Donald Alvin and Mary Catherine Willett Stroh. Survivors include a daughter, Kelly Jean McKeown and partner, Josh Basinger; son, James Arnold John McKeown, Jr. and friend, Brandy Lynn Newby; beloved beagle, Molly; grandchildren, Hayley Skye McKeown, Gracelynn Elizabeth McKeown, Koen Dean Basinger, and Jaxon Douglas Mackey; brothers, Bob and Deb Richardson of Dubuque, Iowa, Joe and Becky Robinson of Dubuque, Iowa, Greg and Vanessa Stroh of Rochelle, Illinois, Brian and Betty Stroh of Las Animas, Colorado; sisters, Tina and Gary Tigges of Durango,  Iowa, Kim and Steve McKinzie of Springfield, and Lisa Weinburg and Richard Thormann of Epworth, Iowa. Also surviving are Sarah Elizabeth Ross and Robert Davidson, who were like a daughter and son to Pam. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made to the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.
