Robert James “Jim” Adams

Robert James “Jim” Adams age 63 of Smithville, passed away Sunday morning, August 26, 2018 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER.  Jim was born March 10, 1955 to his parents, the late Raymond John Adams and Edith Mae Raglin Adams Pyrtle.  In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Veronica Spiker and aunt, Wanda Price.  He was a Methodist and a new car technician.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 40 years, Christina Adams of Smithville; 2 children, Jennifer and husband, Michael Cowan of Smithville and Cory and wife, Audrey Hale Adams of Mt. Juliet; 4 grandchildren, Alex Cowan, Matthew Cowan, Olivia Adams and Charlotte Adams; siblings, Dan Adams of Smithville, Leatha Skelton of Indiana, Judy Williams of Smithville, Rita Brown of Florida, Tammy Adcock of Smithville and Darold Carter of Cookeville; aunt, Kay Sexton and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.  Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:AM until the time of the service at 1 p.m.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Leona Frances “Granny” Billings

August 27, 2018

Mrs. Leona Frances “Granny” Billings age 93 of McMinnville, TN, died Sunday, August 26, 2018, at home surrounded by her family. She was born May 31, 1925, was a homemaker, and a member of Bratchers Crossroad Free Methodist Church. Mrs. Billings was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Frank Lee and Eula Elizabeth Bond Watson, husband of 58 years Cecil Earnest Billings, 11 brothers and 4 sisters.

Survivors include her son Levin (Rachel) Billings, brother Rev. Johnny (Barbara) Watson, grandchildren Gena Barry and Keith (April) Billings, great grandchildren Austin Barry and Ethan Billings, a brother-in-law, and 5 sisters-in-law. Nieces, nephews, a host of friends and loved ones also survive.

Funeral service is 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 29, 2018, in the McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Bobby Wheeler will officiate. Interment will follow at the Centertown Cemetery. The Billings Family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and again on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at the parlors of McMinnville Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to Avalon Hospice.

Auval Estes Atnip

August 22, 2018

88 year old Auval Estes Atnip of Smithville passed away Wednesday at his residence. He was retired from TRW, a veteran, and a Baptist. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Mike Clayborn will officiate and burial will be in the Mt. Holly Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hascal and Lillie Atnip; wife, Mentie Young Atnip; five brothers and sisters, and granddaughter, Toni Davis. Survivors include five children, Austin Atnip,  Brenda and Ricky Adams, Patricia Wright, Lillie Mairene, Tracy Bowman, and Sherry and Terry O’Neil. Eleven grandchildren and many great grandchildren and loving caregivers and family Don and Melinda Williams also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




John Robert Young

August 21, 2018

John Robert Young age 81 of Smithville passed away Sunday evening, August 19, 2018 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER.  He was born August 5, 1937 to his parents, the late Dibrell and Lula Curtis Young.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Jenkins;  brother, Hugh Morris Young.  Mr. Young was a member of Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church, retired from Nissan and a National Guard veteran.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Young of Smithville; daughter, Teresa (Mark) Sullivan of Smithville; 3 grandchildren, Joshua (Tera) Redmon, Brandon Sullivan, Meagan (Seth) Sheffield; 1 great-granddaughter, Josie Mae Redmon; 2 sisters, Dorothy Hale and Bessie Hendrix both of Smithville and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Joel Wood officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.  Visitation with the Young family will be on Tuesday 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Wednesday 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m..  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Paul Wilton Robinson

August 21, 2018

Paul Wilton Robinson age 93 of Smithville, passed away Sunday night, August 19, 2018 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.  He was born June 20, 1925 to his parents, the late Charlie A. and Gladys Bailiff Robinson.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jo Dean Dillard and a brother, Bill Robinson.  Paul graduated the Freewill Baptist College and was a longtime Missionary with the Freewill Baptist Church; he was a faithful member of the Smithville First Freewill Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in WWII and was a member of the American Legion.  He leaves to cherish his memory,  his wife of 68 years, Amy L. Robinson of Smithville; 2 children, Ken and wife Bia Robinson of Murfreesboro and Becky Robinson and husband, David Parker of Smithville; 6 grandchildren, Chloe (Colin) Calhoun, Claire Robinson, Paul Holland, Zach (Amanda) Parker, Samantha Parker and Hannah Parker; 1 great-grandson, Colin Bret Calhoun, III and all of Paul and Amy’s Extended Missionary Family.  In addition to flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Foreign Mission Fund of the Freewill Baptist Church.  Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.



Grady Seldon George, Sr.

Grady Seldon George, Sr., age 95, of Woodbury passed away Friday, August 17, 2018 at Centennial Medical Center.  Grady was born on October 25, 1922 to the late Sammy & Jennie Tate George in the Gassaway Community of Cannon County.

Survivors include his children, David (Joan) George of Bradyville, Jana (Cliff) Reigle of Woodbury, Grady (Carol) George, Jr. of Woodbury, Faye (Allen) Morse of Gassaway, & Beth (Michael) Palombo of Woodbury; Brother, Frelan (Judy) George of Manchester; Sister-in-law, Myra (Jim) Kastor of Statesville, NC; Grandchildren, Micheal (Beth) George & Kevin (Katina) George, both of Bradyville, Amy Parker & Jamie Slatton, both of Woodbury, James (April) Hines of Murfreesboro, Michelle (Travis) Walker of Pleasant View, TN, Angela (Josh) Cossey of Woodbury, Alana (Matt) Quarles of Dowelltown, Dana (Dave) Brown of Murfreesboro, & Samuel Palombo of Marietta, GA; Great Grandchildren, Andrea (Jackie) Myers, Heather (Evan) Sharp, Nathan (Brittany) George, Cole & Cassie George, Jacob Schwartz, Chelsey Crisp, Will (Shellie) Parker, Haley Schwartz, Dillon Parker, Katie Slatton, Kinley Phelps, Bo Parker, Weston Slatton, Michaela Miron, Paige Walker, Loren Hines, Libby Hines, Gage Walker, Lucas Hines, Whitleigh Cossey, Hayden, Colt, & Madison Quarles, & Harper Grace Brown.

In addition to his parents, Mr. George was preceded in death by his wife, Avanell Jones George; and Siblings, Nina Campbell, Inez Bogle, Ernestine Tate, Betty Ledna, Medford George, & Howard George.

Grady was a member of the Methodist Church and was a farmer.  He was a Veteran of the Army where he was a Master Sgt. and served in World War II.  He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.  Mr. George was a member of the Cannon County Walking Horse Association & the Cannon County Soil Conservation.

Funeral Services will be 2 PM Tuesday, August 21, 2018 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bros. Frelan George, Bobby Nichols, & David George officiating.  Interment will follow at Leoni Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be Monday, August 20, 2018 from 2 PM to 9 PM.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
