Sue Ellis

Sue Ellis, age 70, currently of Paris, TX, and a longtime resident of Alexandria, TN, passed away quietly on Friday, July 6, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born March 3, 1948 in Nashville, TN to Jesse Edgar and Beulah Williams Greer.

Sue had several careers in her working life, having served as Dr. Cripps medical assistant for several years, then retired from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department. She also worked as a cosmetologist and as an Emergency Medical Technician at different times. Sue had many loves, her family most of all, her God, horses, and all kinds of animals. She enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband and if you knew her, she was kind and straight to the point!

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Elmer Lee Ellis, Jr., of Alexandria, TN; a daughter, Tammy (John) Harrington, of Paris, TX; a son, Jeff (Lynette) Ellis and children, Jordy Ellis, Jorjenna (Jemini) Chrisman, all of Silver Point, TN; a son, Jamie (Patty) Ellis and children, Jay Ellis & Kristen Ellis, all of Watertown, TN; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Braedyn, & Caisyn; a brother, Don (Carol) Greer, Goodlettsville, TN; sister, Becky Hobbs, Smithville, TN; as well as several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Ellis are scheduled to be conducted from Avant Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 1PM. Interment will follow in the Hillview Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation with the Ellis Family will be at the Avant Funeral Home on Monday from 4PM until 8PM and again on Tuesday after 11AM until service time at 1PM.




Martha Eloise Gothard

Martha Eloise Gothard age 82 of Cookeville and a native of Smithville, passed away Thursday evening, July 5, 2018 at NHC HealthCare in Cookeville. She was born January 29, 1936 to her parents, William Sanford and Geneva Raines Holcomb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Holcomb. Eloise was a homemaker and a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish her memory, 3 children, Randy Gothard of Silver Point, Martha Jane Partridge of Lebanon and Sarah Gothard Smith of Lebanon; 6 grandchildren, Brittany Kuykendall, Adam Gothard, Matthew Beard, John Partridge, Luke Partridge and Abby Smith; 5 great-grandchildren, Samuel Karl and Christina Kuykendall, Grant Partridge, Maverick and Hampton Smith; sister, Imogene Johnston of Las Vegas; aunt, Katherine Hudson of Whitwell. Funeral services will be conducted 1 PM Monday, July 9, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday 3 PM until 6 PM and Monday 11 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM. In addition to flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Whorton Springs Cemetery Fund or Gideon Bibles. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Anthony Neal “Tony” Bates

Anthony Neal “Tony” Bates age 58 a native of Smithville and a longtime resident of Gainesboro, passed away Saturday morning, June 30, 2018 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Lee and Juanita Johnson Bates; son, Matthew Bates; 3 sisters, Wanda Kay Pack, Sheron Ann Whitworth and Sandra Bates; 2 brothers, Ronald Wayne and Donald Lane Bates. He was a Christian and a construction worker. He is survived by his wife, Regina Bates of Gainesboro; 3 children, Jared Bates of Gainesboro, Jordan Hutson of Gainesboro and Jennifer Hawkins of Smithville; 2 grandchildren, Faith and Eli Judkins; 2 sisters, Thelma (Bobby “Stub”) Martin and Janet Hawker both of Smithville; 1 brother, Kenny (Maira) Bates of Smithville; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 2:PM Thursday, July 5, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Bonham Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday 10AM until the time of the service at 2:PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




J.B. Brown

June 30, 2018

82 year old J.B. Brown of Celina passed away Friday at his residence. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Old Union Cemetery in Hilham, Tennessee. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch Hickman and Nellie Nannie Brown; brother, Willard Brown; sister, Anna Belle Ramsey; sons, John Rickey, Lonnie Lee, Roscoe Jaye and Carl Freeman Brown; daughters, Jean Marie McCormick and Judy Brown; wife Margie Hammock Brown; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Allen Brown. Survivors include companion, Christine Brewer; sons, Glen and Vonda Brown, Hoss and Holly Brown, Curtis Brown and David Bruce Brown; and a step-son, Jimmy Brewer. Daughter, Dorothy and Gary Sanders; step-daughter, Melissa and Kenneth Estep; brother, Freeman Brown; sisters, Emmaline Chaffin, Betty Bryant, Bobbie and Jess Ledbetter, Jewel and Doyle Bilbrey, and Janie and Lonnie Shoemake. Eighteen grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. Three special friends, Charlie Copeland, James Grub (Grubworm) and Fred Emmerton along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors, Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Love-Cantrell Funeral Home to help with burial expenses in memory of Mr. Brown.




David Summers

June 26, 2018

David Summers age 68 of Smithville, passed away Monday evening, June 25, 2018 at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Elbridge and Annie Odell Pedigo Summers; granddaughter, Olivia Taylor; mother-in-law, Shirley Southard. He attended the Experience in Murfreesboro, was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and was animal control with the City of Smithville. David coached Little League and Senior League Baseball and Jr. Pro Basketball. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Monica Summers of Smithville; 3 children, Cindy (Ken) Taylor of Smithville, Travis (Ashley) Summers of Murfreesboro and Freddy Summers of Smithville; 4 grandchildren, Shauna, Abbi, and Kenlee Taylor and Devin Summers; 2 sisters, Barbara Summers of Gordonsville and Sue Petty of Smithville; 1 brother, Eddie (Jean) Summers of Watertown and several nephews and cousins. The family has honored David’s request to be cremated and there will be a Memorial Service 2 PM Thursday, June 28, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Trent Colwell officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM. Ewin L. Herman

June 26, 2018

83 year old Ewin L. Herman of Liberty passed away Sunday at Northside Healthcare in Murfreesboro. He was a Baptist, a Korean War veteran of the US Navy, and a retired truck driver. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Liberty. Leonard Herman will officiate and burial will be in the Mount Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home and Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jep and Willie Taylor Herman; a daughter, Judy Carol Walker Womack; and two sisters, Bertie Lee Bogle and Dean Murphy; and two infant brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Vicky Murdock of Murfreesboro. A son, Jerry and Murinna Herman of Liberty. Five grandchildren, Aaron and Keri Walker of Tullahoma, Leslie and Zane McKee of Lascassas, Olivia and Matt Melton of Watertown, Chris Tate of Murfreesboro, and Jessica and Patrick Baine of Lavergne and five great grandchildren also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made to the Lighthouse Christian Camp.
