Dorothy Martin George

Mrs. Dorothy Martin George, age 83 of Smithville, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Vanderbilt Wilson Co. Hospital. She was the retired owner of Dot’s Sports Print.
Mrs. George was born on January 29, 1940 in Smithville to her parents, Paul & Lassie Linder Martin who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tommy George, daughter, Diane Mooneyham, 3 brothers, Jerry George III, Tavis Martin and Jimmy Martin and 2 sisters, Paulette Winchester and Betty Cantrell.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, September 6 at 11:00am at Adcock Cemetery.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Charlotte Trapp of Smithville, Tonya (Travis) Lee of Baxter, 5 grandchildren, Ginger, Heather & Brian Trapp, Erica & Paula Mooneyham, 6 great-grandchildren, 2 1/2 great-great-grandchilren, 1 brother, Jerry (Carlene) Martin of Smithville, 2 sisters-inlaw, Shirley Martin of Smithville and Nancy (David) Womack of McMinnville.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to Love-Cantrell Funeral Home to help with the funeral expenses.

Johnnie Magaline Davenport

Johnnie Magaline Davenport, 91,  died Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at NHC – Smithville. She was born in Wilson Co., TN.

She is survived by her 4 daughters, Brenda (David) Dodd, Darlene Davenport Gilliam and Pam (David) Gaither all of Woodbury and Regina (Stephen) Mayo of Bradyville; 11 grandchildren, John (Britany) Dodd, Bridgette Dodd, Derrick (Beth) Cooper, Leslie (Tyson) Stephens, Dale Mayo, Lindsey Davenport (Eric Vickers), Jacob (Brittany) Duggin, Dustin Mayo, Austin Duggin (Madison Blanton) Samantha Gaither and Madison (Lane) Poss and her siblings, Betty (Dooley) Green of Morrison, Arlene (Larry) Sanders of Woodbury and Clyde (Betty) McCord of Woodbury. 17 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her father and stepmother, Rufus Ed and Liz Murphy, her mother, Martha Mai Warren Murphy; her husband, Vess Davenport; son, David Davenport and siblings, Ines Davenport, Clifton “Tip” Murphy, Fannie Ruth Fletcher, Allie Allen, George Murphy, Roy Murphy, Joe Murphy, Lela Finley, Howard Murphy, Ray Murphy, Sally Jane Murphy, JT McCord, Margie Burks, Jo Bryan and John McCord.

A member of the Sycamore Baptist church, she was a retired seamstress. She enjoyed planting and tending to her flowers. The more she had the happier she was. She also enjoyed quilting and playing Bingo.

Funeral services will be 4:00 P.M. Friday, September 1, 2023 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Tim Pelham officiating. Interment will follow in the Sycamore cemetery.

Pallbearers include her loving grandchildren, John Dodd, Derrick Copper, Dale and Dustin Mayo, Jacob and Austin Duggin, Tyson Stephens, Eric Vickers, Preslee Merriman, Bridgette Dodd, Leslie Stephens and Lindsey Davenport.

Visitation with the family will be from 11:00 A.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 31, 2023 and Friday, September 1, 2023 from 10:00 A.M. until her time of service.

Georgia Hawker

August 29, 2023

88-year-old Georgia Hawker of Dowelltown died Sunday at Waters at Winchester. She was a seamstress at Designs by Norvell.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 12 noon at the Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Nathan Hale will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service at 12 noon.

She was preceded in death by her parents Willie Owen and Ethel Ballinger; her husband Jr. Hawker; son Randy Hawker; Brothers, Edwin Owen and Donald Owens; and a sister Carlyne Dickey.

Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Hinson. Grandsons, Cole and Kelsey Hawker and Clint Hawker along with several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Layne Neal

August 27, 2023

Kenneth Layne Neal, 70, of Smithville passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was born in Dekalb County TN and lived there all his life. Survivors include his beautiful wife of 21 years Jeanette Neal; children Jeremy (Jamie) Neal of Smithville, Jason Neal (Abigail Laprad) of Cookeville, Candi West of Smithville. Grandchildren Deeanna Neal, MacKenzie Neal, Jakeb Neal, Hunter (Hannah) Byford, Courtney Byford, Kayleigh West, Hanniah West and his beloved dog and sidekick Cookie. Brother David (Gloria) Neal, Jimmy (Carolyn) Neal, and Danny Neal. Sister Nina Lawrence, Diane (Danny) Evans, and Betty (Glenn) Byford and a Brother-in-law Donald Knowles. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. Special Friends: Jimmy & Carolyn Agee, Jerry Pollard, Brian Agee, Phillip Pryor and Brian Lovett. He was preceded in death by his parents Grady Austin (Emmo Jean) Neal, and sister Donna Kay Knowles. Kenneth was retired from Federal Mogul and was a member of Outreach Baptist Church. He enjoyed may things in life including gardening, hunting, fishing at the lake, camping with loved ones, being with his dog Cookie and grand-dog Groot. He was a Boy Scout Master for several years and touched so many lives. He loved making everyone smile, laugh and he never met a stranger. Most of all he loved spending time with family, friends, and church family. Kenneth’s wishes were to be cremated and his ashes remain with his beautiful wife until her passing. Maggie Lorane Morrison Bryant

August 27, 2023

Mrs. Maggie Lorane Morrison Bryant, age 89 of Smithville, passed away at her residence early Saturday morning surrounded by those who loved and cherished her. She was a member of the Short Mtn. Church of God and retired from Lifeway.

She was born on December 9, 1933 in Killarney, West Virginia to her parents Barney and Fannie Morrison who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Bryant, 3 brothers, Frank, Charlie and John Morrison and 1 sister, Ola Christian.

There will be a graveside service on Monday at 3:30 at DeKalb Memorial Gardens with Bro. Chris Moore officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Survivors include her niece and caregiver, Linda (James) Crook, Great niece, Eden Nokes, 2 sisters-in-law, Mary Knowles and Dorothy Morrison. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Betty Jo Atnip

August 25, 2023

Mrs. Betty Jo Atnip, age 78 of Smithville, passed away at her residence on Friday morning, August 25, 2023. She retired as a cashier with the Kroger Corp. after 40 years, attended Whorton Springs Baptist Church, and enjoyed spending time with her family especially Saturday outings with her sisters.

She was born on October 10, 1944 in Smithville to her parents, the late Elmer and Jessie Luna Knowles. She was also preceded in death by 6 brothers, JT, Lovell, Aaron “Doc”, Herbert, Jesse and Elmer Knowles; and 3 sisters, Joyce Large, Ruby Adcock and Rosa Mae Knowles.

Visitation with the Atnip family will be on Sunday from 3:00 until 8:00pm and on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Bro. Larry Womack and Bro. David Mahan will officiate and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Charles Atnip; son, Ricky (Lisa) Atnip; 2 sisters, Lois (Jimmy) Davis and Ruth (Ronnie) Hobbs; brother-in-law, John (Betty Jean “BJ”) Atnip; sister-in-law, Phyllis (Ronnie) Tramel all of Smithville; several nieces and nephew also survive.
