Sue Lassiter

Sue Lassiter, a lifelong resident of Smithville passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022, at 2:20 PM at the Webb House in Smithville, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Parthenia Vanatta; husband, Tom Lassiter; 5 brothers, Lloyd, JC, Howard, Ernest and Eugene Vanatta; 2 sisters, Maureen Jones and Minnie Herman. Sue was a member of Snow Hill Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club for many years and held many positions including President, Vice-President and Secretary. Sue retired from Caney Fork Development Corporation after a career serving the people of DeKalb County for many years. After retirement, Sue would get to join NHC part time and continue doing what she loved…. helping others. Sue leaves to cherish her memory, 2 children, Vicky (Trey) Hill of Brentwood, TN and Todd (Misty) Lassiter of Smithville; grandchildren, Presley Hill (AJ Villarreal) of Fairview, TN, Macey Lassiter (Triston Stanley) of Smithville, Brady Hill of Brentwood and Emileigh Lassiter of Smithville; great-grandchild, Greyson Stanley of Smithville; sister, Frances Gilley of Nashville; sister-in-law, Jean Vanatta of Smithville. Funeral services celebrating her life will be 11:AM Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday 4 PM until 7 PM and Tuesday 9:AM until the time of the service at 11:AM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Helen Perry LaFever

November 25, 2022

Ms. Helen Perry LaFever age 77 of Sparta, TN passed away Friday morning, November 25, 2022 at the Woodbury Health & Rehab Center.

Ms. LaFever was born on February 2, 1945 in Woodbury, TN to her parents, the late Johnny & Ethel Bell Perry. Her husband, UL LaFever also preceded her in death. She was retired as the Co-Owner of Center Hill Sports Marine & was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 28, 2022 at 11am from the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Tim Bumbalough will officiate with burial following at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, from 12noon – 6pm & Monday from 9am until the service time at 11am.

Survivors include her Son, Eugene LaFever of Sparta, TN. Granddaughter, Sahara “Sarabeth” LaFever of Sparta, TN. Sister, Sue (Jimmy) Bryson of Donelson, TN. Sister-in-law, Louisa (Jack) Phelps of Nashville, TN & a Brother-in-law, Calvin LaFever (Merle Sandlin) of Smithville, TN. Niece & Nephew, Amy (Jeff) Smith & Charles (Kelly) Bryson. Jeremy Aaron Bilbrey

November 25, 2022

Jeremy Aaron Bilbrey age 48 of Smithville passed away Monday, November 21, 2022, at his residence. Jeremy was born November 18, 1974, to his parents, Mark Bilbrey and Deborah Cooper Alexander. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by grandparents, Clarence and Cola Dean Bilbrey, Jim and Elizabeth Cooper; brother, BJ Bilbrey. Jeremy was a construction worker. Jeremy was known for his big heart and ready smile. He would gladly share whatever he had with anyone, and never knew a stranger. He will truly be missed by his family and friends. Jeremy leaves to cherish his memory, 2 daughters, Kimberly Bilbrey of Smithville and Kay De’Anna Bilbrey of Sparta; 2 sons, Malakai Bilbrey and Kristian Bilbrey both of Sparta; grandchildren, Collin, Caysen, Oaklynn, Maddux, Myles, Bodi and soon arriving Brixton; father, Mark Bilbrey of Florida; Deborah Alexander of Kansas; sister, Brandi Bathon of Kansas; 2 brothers, Dustin Bilbrey of Tennessee and Jason Key of Arkansas. The family has honored Jeremy’s request to be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and will be announced. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




William Earl Bush, III

November 24, 2022

William Earl Bush, III “Bill” aged 63 passed away after heart complications on Sunday, November 13th, 2022 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherry Chumbley Bush and William Earl Bush, Jr. Surviving family members include one son, Dr. William Earl Bush, IV, two brothers, John Chumbley Bush and Thomas Nixon Bush.

Mr. Bush graduated from DeKalb County High School in 1977. After high school, he completed an internship serving as a page in Washington, D.C. for congressman Joe L. Evins. During the 1980’s Mr. Bush lived and worked in Murfreesboro, Tennessee while studying law at Middle Tennessee State University. In 1983, he married Donna Gwen Eley from Woodbury, Tennessee and they had one son, Will who became a classically trained concert organist.

Mr. Bush will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at DeKalb County Memorial Gardens on Monday, November 28th at 2 p.m.

Danny Ray Ponder

November 23, 2022

Danny Ray Ponder age 61 of Dowelltown, passed away Thursday November 17, 2022, at his residence. He was born August 17, 1961, to his parents, Mary Frances Pratt Ponder Smith and the late Frank Eugene Ponder. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by brother, Jeffery Ponder; and sister, Charlotte Ponder. Mr. Ponder served in the Army National Guard and worked for Yates at Nissan, and he was a Tool and Die Maker. He is survived by his mother, Frances Smith of Dowelltown; brother, Gary Ponder of Dowelltown; niece, Gwen Harrington of Shelbyville; nephews, Aaron Ponder, Chris Ponder and Brandon Ponder. Graveside services will be held 2:30 PM Wednesday November 23, 2022, at Burton-Ponder Cemetery with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday 1:30 P.M. until 2:15 P.M. at which time the family will leave to go to Burton-Ponder Cemetery for the graveside service. The family has ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




James Willard Brock

November 21, 2022

Willard Brock age 63, of Smithville, passed away at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER, Sunday November 20, 2022. He was born April 12, 1959 to his parents, mother Corena Ashburn Brock and his late father, Willis “Mutt” Brock. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by mother-in-law, Alma Meekins; grandparents, James Willie and Sarah Magdalene Brock and Allie and Virda Ashburn. He served for 29 years in the Army National Guard and worked in Construction.  He is survived by his wife, Patty Brock of Smithville; daughters, Laura (Jon) Foutch of Liberty and Renee (David) Close of Watertown; granddaughters, Kelsey (Brandon) Pyles of Liberty, and Alexandria (Kyle) Smith of Knoxville; grandsons, Elijah (Baleigh) Foutch of Liberty, Benjamin and Evan Close of Watertown; great-granddaughters, Miah Johnson and Mai Lynn Foutch of Liberty; great-grandson, Knox Pyles of Liberty; mother, Corena Brock of Sparta; brother, Jerry Brock of Sparta. Funeral services will be held Wednesday November 23, 2022 at 11:00AM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Tim Judd officiating and burial to follow in Plain View Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be Tuesday 4:00 PM till 7:00 PM and on Wednesday 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel.  In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to the DeKalb County Veterans Association. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
