Curtis Ross Layman

Curtis Ross Layman age 79 of Smithville, TN, Madison, Ohio and native born of Fairmont, WV, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at The Webb House in Smithville. He was born November 19, 1939 to his parents, the late Lawrence C. and Mildred Hazel Jones Layman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy S. Manypenny. Early in Curtis’s life he was employed as a truck driver in West Virginia and then moved to Madison, Ohio and was employed for the next 36 years with Morton Salt. Curtis had a passion for the outdoors, he loved to hunt and fish and was a member of Mountain Top Hunting Club and the NRA. He is survived by 4 children, Tyra Sue Layman of Ohio, Starla D. (Durwin) Moore of Ohio, Margaret (Tim) Pyles of Tennessee and Bryan Ross (Sandy) Layman of Ohio; 11 grandchildren, Brandon S. Manypenny, Angela D. Manypenny, Crystal D. Smith, Felecia Olmsteed, Shambriel Moore, Breona Pack, Jennifer A. Pyles, Brandon (Kelsey) Pyles, Curtis Phillip Layman, Thomas Ross Layman and Michael Terrell; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, William H.L. (Carol) Layman of Ohio, Ray (Marge) Layman of Fairmont, WV, Rex C. (Susie) Layman of Fairmont, WV; 2 sisters, Lavada McKinney and Ellen (Gerald L.) Swiger both of Fairmont, WV. Graveside services and interment will be 3 PM Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fairmont, WV. Visitation with the family will be Sunday 2 PM until 3 PM at the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, located at 95 Mt. Zion Cemetery Road in Fairmont. DeKalb Funeral Chapel, Smithville, TN is in charge of the arrangements.




Sandra Kay Chapman Ponder

February 17, 2019

Sandra Kay Chapman Ponder age 53 of Smithville, passed away Sunday evening February 17, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital.  She was born February 19, 1965 to her parents, the late Buster and Gloria Fish Chapman.  She was a member of People’s Pentecostal Church and worked at Federal Mogul.  Survivors include 2 sisters, Tammy Dyer of Smithville and Eva Dover of Smithville; 3 brothers, Josh (Taylor) Chapman of Smithville, Danny (Cindy) Tatrow of Chattanooga and Rod (Lana) Tatrow of Sevierville; mother, Mary (Jay) Young of Smithville; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Heather Johnson and Deanna Boyd.  Funeral services will be 1:PM Thursday, February 21, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Thomas Hewell and Graden Kirksey officiating.  Visitation will be Wednesday 4:PM until 8:PM and Thursday 10:AM until the time of the service at 1:PM.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




William Coleman “Bill” Sparkman

William Coleman “Bill” Sparkman age 89 of Smithville, passed away Sunday morning, February 17, 2019 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville.  He was born January 23, 1930 to his parents, the late Clarence and Lillie Legg Sparkman.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 sister, Leona Sparkman and 6 brothers, Billy, Bobby, Chip, Ronnie, Ronald and Orval Sparkman.  He was a member of Trinity Assembly,  U.S. Navy Veteran, a landscaper and owner of Sparkman Nursery. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jo Ann Sparkman of Smithville; 2 daughters, Pam (Steve) Turner of Baxter and Penny Chapman of Smithville; 2 granddaughters, Crystal (Jacob) Young ad Kelsey (Corey) Spare; 5 great-grandchildren, Lina, Madyson, Kylie and Coleman Hunter Young and Finley Spare and several nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family will be Monday 3:00 until 8:00pm and Tuesday  from 12noon until time of service at 2:00pm. Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Jim Moore officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens with Military honors conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.   



Joe Charles Hearn

February 16, 2019

65 year old Joe Charles Hearn of Alexandria died Friday at his residence. He was a truck driver and a member of the Alexandria Lions Club. The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Don Mathis will officiate and burial will be in the Paschal Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 8 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward Hearn and Katherine Elwie Paschal; a son, Jonathan Charles Hearn; a niece, Dana Carol Hearn; and a nephew, Robert Adam Hearn. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Tammy Hearn of Alexandria. Sons, Tim and Shelley Hearn and Tyler Hearn all of Brush Creek. Grandchildren, Jaycee Johnson, Jayden Hearn, and Justin Hearn. Brothers, Donnie and Carol Hearn and Ben and Kathy Hearn. Nieces and nephews, Rob Charles Hearn, Mary Katherine and Ben Keltner, Brady and Morgan Hearn, and John Bratten and Samantha Hearn. Sister-in-law, Teresa Powell and a brother-in-law, Tim Granstaff. Anderson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Chads Run or the Shriners Hospital for Children.




Colleen Taylor Snyder

Mrs. Colleen Taylor Snyder, age 92, of Murfreesboro, TN, and a native of DeKalb County, TN, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2019.

Mrs. Snyder was born February 23, 1926 in the Indian Creek Community of Dekalb County, TN, a daughter of the late Chess Taylor and Willie Gertrude Fuson Taylor. She married Eugene Snyder and he preceded her in death on October 31, 1997. Mrs. Snyder was also preceded in death by Siblings; Clyde Taylor, Obel Taylor, Willie Joe Taylor, and Clara Nell Taylor, two infant siblings, one great grandchild and one great-great grandchild.

Mrs. Snyder is survived by three sons; Roger (Mae) Snyder of Maryville, TN, Kenny (Dorothy) Snyder of Caryville, TN, and Perry (Shirley) Snyder of Mississippi. Three daughters; Linda Snyder Neal of Smithville, TN, Cathy Snyder Stem of Lascassas, TN, and Dianne Snyder (Dennis) Harper of Lascassas, TN. Brother; J.B. Taylor of Alexandria, TN. Grandchildren; Gayle Pack, Greg Neal, Bruce Neal, Brian Neal, Amber Klipa, Tony Myers, Chris Snyder, and Patricia LaValley. Nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Snyder are scheduled to be conducted from Avant Funeral Homes on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 2PM with Pastor Ronnie Neal officiating. Interment will follow in the DeKalb County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation with the Snyder Family will be at Avant Funeral Home on Sunday from 12:30PM until service time at 2PM.




Joyce Spurlock

February 15, 2019

Joyce Spurlock age 76 of Smithville, went home to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon, February 14, 2019 at her residence.  She was born June 28, 1942 to her parents, the late Arthur and Clara Atnip Hendrixson.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 1 sister, Eva Hill and 3 brothers, Paul, Roy and Vernon Hendrixson.  Joyce was a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church where she was in the Women’s Mission Group; she was a member of the Smithville B&PW Club, worked with the American Heart Association and was a retired Corrections Officer with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 56 years, Jerry Spurlock of Smithville; daughter, Pam (Mike) Baines of Smithville; 2 grandchildren, Michael White (Karla Gaddie) of Virginia Beach, VA and Emily (Josh) Linder of Norfolk, VA; 2 great-grandchildren, Katie Madison Linder and Wesley Paul White; 2 sisters, Anna (Jack) Chidester of White Bluff, TN and Barbara Dean Arnold of Smithville and special extended family, the Pirtle Family.  Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, February 18, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Ric Lee and Mike Carpenter officiating and burial will be in Prosperity Cemetery.  Visitation will be Sunday 12 Noon until  8 PM and Monday 9 AM until 11AM.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
