Ann Simpkins Carpenter Wing

Ann Simpkins Carpenter Wing was born to Odie and Lena (Carney) Simpkins on April 4, 1926 in Cheatham County, TN. She passed away on February 12, 2019 at NHC in Pulaski, TN, due to complications from pneumonia.

After receiving her education at North High School in Nashville, TN, she married Lyle Carpenter on April 20, 1947. She was a loving wife and doting mother to three children, while working tirelessly as a homemaker. She shared her strong passion for music with her family, as well as numerous piano students that she taught throughout her years.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle; sisters: Lillian Simpkins, Louise Terry, Allie May Vandygriff; brothers: Odell Simpkins, Homer Simpkins, Ray Simpkins.

She is survived by her sons: Ray Lyle Carpenter, John Michael Carpenter; daughter: Joyce Ann Herring; grandsons: Jason Carpenter, Joseph Carpenter, Jeremy Carpenter, Michael Waggoner, Brian Carpenter; granddaughters: Brooke Martin, Stacey Jefferson, Rachel Carlin, Rebekah Schmidt; great grandchildren: Kathyrn, Steven, Kylee, Jocelyn, Jodi, Joshua, Wesley, Collin, Anna Ryan, Ella, Evelyn, Alissa, Gabriela, Ari, Michael, Lena, Ben-Luca, Constantin, and Johanna.

Visitation will take place at Anderson & Garrett Funeral Home in Joelton on Thursday, February 14th from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. and again on Friday, February 15th from 11 A.M. until the hour of Service at 1 P.M. with Dr. John M. Carpenter officiating.

Interment follows Service at Carney-Demonbreun Cemetery in Ashland City.

Pallbearers: Jason Carpenter, Joseph Carpenter, Jeremy Carpenter, Michael Waggoner, Brian Carpenter, Wesley Carpenter; Honorary pallbearers: Joshua Carpenter, Collin Harper, Bill Vandygriff, David Vandygriff.




Joe Goodwin

95 year old Joe Goodwin of Smithville passed away Tuesday at NHC Smithville. Mr. Goodwin was a Sergeant in the United States Army and served in World War II. He enlisted in the Army on March 11, 1943 and was honorably discharged on December 30,1945. During his time in the war he was captured as a Prisoner of War on December 16, 1944 until finally being liberated by allied forces on April 30, 1945. He earned many accolades, medals, and ribbons for his service including, among others, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, an Eamet Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal, a Purple Heart, the Victory Medal, and a Prisoner of War Medal. Years later, Mr. Goodwin was awarded an honorary degree from Cumberland University, and also was awarded an appreciation letter from the American Legion for his bravery in the face of battle.

Joe was a member of the American Ex Prisoners of War, American Legion, VFW, and a University of Tennessee VFL (Vol for Life). He was also a retired car salesman with Stribling Chevrolet.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Morgan Wallace will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 12 noon until 3 p.m. and then the family will take a two hour rest period during which time they will not be present but visitors are still welcome. The family will return from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Daisy Goodwin and two sisters, Mildred Brent and Marie Hester. Survivors include his wife of 67 years Ann Simms Goodwin. Six children, Ronnie and Deborah Goodwin, Elizabeth and Tom Newkirk, Bill Goodwin, Joey and Kathy Goodwin, Pam and Gary Green, and Jill and Doug Omer. Nine grandchildren, Scott and Amanda Goodwin, Matt Goodwin, Grant and Taylor Goodwin, Katelyn Goodwin, Wesley and Melissa Young, Tom and Dena Newkirk,  Michael Newkirk, Olivia Sloane Omer and Hope Omer. Seven great grandchildren, Cooper and Kiptyn Goodwin, Wyatt and Lanie Young, Jordan, Kaitlin, and Wyatt Newkirk.

Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lighthouse Christian Camp or to the Ex-Prisoners of War.




Priscilla Watson

February 13, 2019

92 year old Priscilla Watson of Smithville passed away Tuesday at NHC Smithville. She was a retired waitress. The family has chosen direct cremation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Helen Fernald Younger. Survivors include her husband, Charles M. Watson of Smithville. Daughters, Audrey Baker of Florida and Nancy Dodrill of New York and Helen Cassino of Arizona. Grandchildren, Donna Chambless, Charlene Vizard, Elizabeth Obrien, and Ronald Baker. Several great grand and great great grandchildren survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




Fanci Siddhartha Burns

3 month old Fanci Siddhartha Burns, the daughter of Matthew Pickard and Faedra Burns went home to be with the Lord, Sunday morning February 10, 2019 at the St. Thomas DeKalb ER.  Fanci was born November 16, 2018 in Cookeville.  She was preceded in death by her great grandparents: Thomas & Carol Pickard.  In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents; Edward Burns and Melinda League both of Smithville, Shanon & Kaye Pickard of Kingston Springs; Great Grandparents: Joe & Gloria Biggs of Ashland City, Dorothy Burns of Lebanon; Several extended family and friends also survived.  A graveside service will be held 1 pm Thursday February 14, 2019 at DeKalb Memorial Gardens with Bro. Dwayne Cornelius officiating.  There will be no visitation or services held at the funeral home.  Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service at 1 pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with cemetery expenses.  The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Northside Church of Christ, Chaplain Dwayne Cornelius and to everyone that has assisted and prayed for them during this time.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.



Mark Jeffery Young

Mark Jeffery Young age 55 of Smithville, passed away Friday, January 25, 2019 at his residence. He was born March 3, 1963 in Nashville. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Mae Gilley and sister, Betty H. Young. He worked at Federal Mogul and was a member of the Dowelltown Baptist Church. He is survived by 1 daughter, Amy Money of Winchester, TN; 1 grandson; 2 brothers, Randy Gilley (Janie Thompson) of Dowelltown and Stevie Young of Smithville; 2 nieces, Leslie (Charles) Martin and Amanda (Bobby) Menzie both of Smithville; special friend and caregiver, Donnita Linder. The family has honored Mark’s request to be cremated and a family graveside memorial service will be held later. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




William Charles Lee Pack

William Charles Lee Pack, the 4 day old infant son of Nathan Pack and Destiny Ambrose, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 6th at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. He was born Saturday, February 2, 2019 in McMinnville. He was preceded in death by great-grandmother Kay Pack and great-grandfather, Bill Ambrose. In addition to his parents, he is survived by grandparents, Michell Anderson, Charles B. Pack and Billy Ambrose all of Smithville and Barbara Hershman of Cookeville; great-grandparents, Patsy Gibbs of Dowelltown and Kathy Ambrose of Smithville; several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. Graveside services and interment will be 3:30 PM Friday, February 8, 2019 at DeKalb Cemetery with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. There will be no visitation or services at the funeral home, family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
