Altie L. Dyer Knowles

Mrs. Altie L. Dyer Knowles passed away Wednesday morning, September 20,2023 at her residence. She was retired from Smithville Shirt Factory, a retired dietician with the DeKalb Co. School System and a retired caregiver. She was a member of the Smithville Church of Christ.

She was born on April 27, 1943 in Gainesboro, TN to her parents, Haskel and Flossie Pippin Dyer who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by 3 sisters, Stella Clemmons, Ella Chaffin and Linda Brown, 5 brothers, William, Hubert, Gordon, Franklin and Earl Dyer.

Visitation with the family will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 and on Friday from 9:00 to the time of service at 1:00 in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Wayne Lankford and Bro. Dewey Dyer will be officiating. Burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Gerald Knowles, 4 sons, Randall (Tracy) Knowles, Mark Knowles, Allen (Sheila) Knowles and Zachary Knowles all of Smithville, 3 grandchildren, Lukas and Clara Knowles and Mackenzie Patridge, 2 sisters, Reba Turner of Cookeville and Gladys Chaffin of MI, 1 brother, Raymond Dyer of McMinnville.

Mitzi Anne Crook Taylor

September 19, 2023

Mitzi Anne Crook Taylor age 59 of Doweltown passed away Monday morning, September 18, 2023 at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro. She was born February 28, 1964 to her parents, the late W.C. and Autrey Clayton Crook. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Rev. P.M. and Hattie Clayton and Ewing and Alta Crook. She was a factory worker. She leaves to cherish her memory, 1 son, Matthew Ryan Taylor of Dowelltown; 2 sisters, Bettye Crook of Dowelltown and Penny Lou (Jay) Youngblood of Lascassas; 1 brother, Jerry (Brenda) Crook of Smithville; 1 nephew, Jeremy Crook and several cousins. The family has honored Mitzi’s request to be cremated and no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Ricky Lynn Murphy

Ricky Lynn Murphy, age 55, passed away, Sunday September 17, 2023, at his residence. He was born July 6, 1968, to his parents the late L. C. and Patty Neal Murphy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Burce Murphy; and sister, Martha Sue Murphy. Mr. Murphy attended Outreach Baptist Chruch and worked in Nursery. He is survived by his wife, Melissa Murphy of Smithville; 2 sons, Cody (Michaela) Murphy of Smithville, and Alex Murphy of Smithville; 8 grandchildren, Brayden, Austin, Colby, Trey, Alton, Colton, Hunter and Elizabeth; 2 sisters, Lisa Bain, Teesha (Keith) Reynolds of Smithville; 3 brothers, Curtis (Pam) Murphy of Indiana, Calvin (Angel) Murphy of Indiana and Sherman Murphy of Smithville; brother-in-law and best friend, Dickie Ray Bain; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Friday September 22, 2023, at 2:30 PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro, Nathan Thomason officiating and burial to follow in Dekalb Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday September 22, 2023, at10:00AM until the time of the service at 2:30PM. The family ask donations may be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. Celena Marie Musick

Celena Marie Musick age 46, of Smithville, passed away Tuesday September 12, 2023, at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital.  She was born December 24, 1976, in Madison Heights, Michigan, but raised in Smithville, Tn.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Morris; brothers, Robert Jeremiah Musick, and Matthew Musick; sister, Casey Michelle Musick.  She attended Hope Ministries and was a homemaker.  Celena is survived by 4 children, Toni Michelle Lloyd, Jessica Lloyd Estes, Zackary Michael Musick (Matthew Akins) and Alannah Rose Musick-Morris all of Smithville; grandchildren, MaKayla Turner, KahLanna Turner, Cloey Ervin, Ezraya Gingerich, Aiden Ricketts, Lynox Ricketts, Spencer Ricketts, Emberly Musick-Morris, Riversyn Musick-Morris; parents, Linda Snyders, Gary (Lisa) Musick; brothers, Gary Musick, Larry Musick, Paul Musick, Jason Musick, and Dylan Musick; sister, Kellie Musick. Visitation will be held Friday, September 22, 2023, at 10:00AM until 1:00PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Sandy Brown

Sandy Brown, age 64, of Dowelltown, passed away September 12, 2023, at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. She was born October 14, 1958, to her parents the late Joseph and Dorothy Smith Costanza. Sandy was a member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church, worked at Oakton Community College for 28 years, served in the United States Army, a member of the Eastern Star, a Business Woman, a candidate for Assessor of Property when she first moved to DeKalb County, director of the Alexandria Senior Center, a Radio Personality on Wjle with The Ben Herman Radio Program, and a very active person within the community. She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Brown of Dowelltown; son, Robert (Jennifer) Brown of Hermitage; 3 grandchildren, Bobby Brown, Katelyn Brown and Evie Brown; sister Judie Johnson of California. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 22, 2023, at 1:00 PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Clayton and Family and Friends officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Sandy. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




Cookie Dean Johnson

September 13, 2023

Cookie Dean Johnson, age 61 of Smyrna, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at her residence. She was a former worker at Smith Port Cabinetry.

Cookie was born on April 24, 1962 in Smithville, TN to her parents, O’Dell Johnson and Ruby Cripps Ervin, who preceded her in death.

Visitation with the Johnson family will be on Thursday from 4pm until 8pm and on Friday from noon until the service time at 2:00pm. Bro. Jack Patterson will officiate with burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, Tim Culwell and brother, Jason Ervin.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Tiffany (Joseph) Redmon of Smithville; 1 son, Travis Melton (Crystal Cunningham) of Sparta; 9 grandchildren, Topanga Patrick, Keirra Patrick, Weston Melton, Willow Melton, Dominic (Brittany) Pasley, Bristol Redmon, Autumn Redmon, Bradley Redmon, and John Redmon; 2 great grandchildren, Blayke and Saylor Pasley; 1 brother, Michael Ervin of Ardmore, TN; and caregiver, Leigh Woodall of Smyrna.
