Wallace Leon Johnson age 82 of Liberty, passed away Friday night August 9, 2024, at NHC Healthcare in Smithville. He was born August 4, 1942, to his parents the late Charles Franklin and Nonnie Bell Mathis Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, Bryan Johnson and brother, Billy Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of Cave Springs Missionary Baptist Church and was a construction worker. He is survived by wife, Joyce Johnson of Liberty; children, David (Emily) Johnson of Murfreesboro, Kim (Michael) Riley of Sparta, Rhonda (Charlie) Caplinger of Smithville, Sissy Johnson Cooper of Smithville, Mandi Parker of McMinnville; 12 grandchildren, Dustin, Hayden, Holly, Kady, Nikki, Matthew, Jonathan, Michael, Jennifer, Colby, Braxton, Bryan; 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Judy Johnson of Liberty. Funeral services will be 3 PM Monday August 12, 2024, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Elder Steven Brooks and Bro. Micheal Hale officiating and burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday 11:AM until the time of the service at 3 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is honored to care for the Johnson family.

Phyllis Mai Hallum of Smithville age 70 passed away Wednesday August 7, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Woodbury. She was born October 10, 1953, to her, mother, Gladys Cantrell and her late father Elmus “Tot” Cantrell. In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by a son, Jeremy Hallum; brother-in-law, Alan Bradford. Ms. Hallum was a member of Friendship The Baptist Church and worked as a Teachers Aid for more than 20 years for the DeKalb County Board of Education. She is survived by daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Moore of Woodbury; grandchildren, Wesley Hallum, Peyton Hallum, Conner Crabtree, Trey Crabtree, Blake (Emily) Moore, and Brooke Moore; great grandchildren, Blakely Moore, Ellie Moore, and Millie Moore; mother, Gladys Cantrell of Smithville; sister, Suzanne (Bill) Gash of Smithville; nieces Mandy (Paul) Talley, Rachel (Kieran) Russell; nephews, Cory (Samantha) Bradford, and Jordan (Erika) Gash; several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive; special friend, Donna Knowles. Funeral services will be held Saturday August 10, 2024, at 3:00PM with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Billy Joe Cripps

Billy Joe Cripps of Dowelltown passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 6, 2024 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. “Wormy” and Ella Stanley Cripps, daughter, Malissa Cripps; grandson, Joshua Cripps. He was a retired mechanic in the garment industry, served in the National Guard, member of the Smithville First Baptist Church and attended the Mt. Herman Baptist Church. He is survived by wife of 43 years, Ann Cripps of Dowelltown; sons, Joey (Felicia) Cripps of Smithville, Steven (Josie) Anderson of Dowelltown, Bobby Anderson of Dowelltown; grandchildren, Sabrina, Marcus, Alex, Briston, Kelsea, Zaylyn, Oaklynn and Waylynn; great-grandson, Spencer; sister, Bobbie Jean Foster of Lebanon. A Celebration of Life will be held 1 PM Saturday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Mark Bass and Dave Carden officiating and entombment will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family has asked that the Class of 1959 serve as honorary pallbearers. In addition to flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Smithville First Baptist Chruch or Mt. Herman Baptist Church, in memory of Billy Joe. Visitation will be Friday 3 PM until 7 PM and Saturday 9:AM until the time of the service at 1 PM. Frank Jones

Mr. Frank Jones, age 80 of Sparta, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Ascensions St. Thomas in Sparta. Mr. Jones was a member of Johnson’s Chapel Baptist Church. He worked as a truck driver for Moore’s Chip, was owner of Thomasview Market, and also owned and managed rental property.
He was born in Smithville, TN on May 18, 1944 to his parents, the late Leftrick and Elizabeth Ashburn Jones. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by 5 siblings, Rosell Robinson, Oneida Massa, Joe Jones, Clara Nell Stoglin, and Roy Jones.
Visitation with family as well as the funeral service will be in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home on Friday, August 9 from 10am until the time of the service at 1pm with Bro. Jeremy Poole officiating. Burial will follow in Johnson’s Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jo Ann Jones of Sparta; sister-in-law, Lou Jones of Sparta; 2 nieces, Vicki (Paul) Jarvis of Lebanon, and Lori (Josh) Holloway of Sparta ; 1 nephew, Steven Mark Jones of Sparta; 4 great-nieces, Raychel Jarvis of Lebanon, Jennifer Ward (Brad Johnson) of Baxter, Marley Jones and Lauren Holloway both of Sparta; 1 great-nephew, Luke Holloway of Sparta,; 4 great-great nephews, Blake Lockwood of Lebanon, Maddox Ward and Roman Ward and Wesley Johnson, all of Baxter; special friend, Hunter Mullican, and Eddie (Faye) Hutchings all of Sparta.
In addition to flowers, contributions can be made in Mr. Jones memory to Johnson’s Chapel Cemetery.

Charlie Mai Daniel age 81 passed away at her residence in Smithville, Sunday night August 4, 2024. She was born January 25, 1943 to her parents the late Dallas and Myrtle Ursery Colwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jackie Daniel and a brother, Alton Colwell. Ms. Charlie Mai was a member of Smithville Church of God and a retired factory worker, having worked at the Shirt Factory, Texas Boot and Kingston Timers. She is survived by daughter, Heather Daniel of Smithville; 5 sisters, Mary (Ronnie) Bates of Smithville, Frances (Eddie) McGuire of Smithville, Teresa (Jerry) Pack of Livingston, Barbara (Keith) Huling of Smithville, and Tena Colwell of Smithville; 3 brothers, Albert (Mary) Colwell of Smithville, Delbert (Elizabeth) Colwell of Smithville, and Roy (Debbie) Colwell of Murfreesboro; several nieces and nephews; special great nieces and nephew, Emma and Madison Bates, Joseph Baker, Allison Sanders, and Mackenzie Brindley; special great-great nephew, Jordan Wiggins; sister-in-law, Christine Colwell of Smithville. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Wednesday August 7, 2024 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Chris Moore officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday 3 PM till 7 PM and Wednesday 10:AM until the time of the service at 1 PM. Lisa Joyce Carr, a lifelong resident of Smithville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at NHC of Smithville. Born on November 29, 1969, in Smithville, Lisa was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her. She was a 1990 graduate of Cookeville High School and a devoted member of the Church of Christ. Despite being bedridden for the last 10 years of her life, Lisa’s spirit and love for her family never wavered.
Lisa’s life was marked by her unwavering faith and the deep bonds she shared with her family and friends. She is survived by a loving and extensive family, including her aunt and uncle, Joyce & James Meadows of Smithville; cousins, Jimmy (Penny) Meadows of Smithville, Bradley (Ashley N.) Harris of Monterey, Ashley L. (India) Harris of Rickman, Sonya (Levi) Phillips of Monterey, Jacob Harris of Monterey, Trevor Harris of Monterey, Michael David White of Baxter, Glen (Jill) Herren of Cookeville, Kevin Thomas of Baxter, and Jared Herren of Silver Point. Lisa also leaves behind her stepmother, Vicky Callahan of Cookeville, and her children, Jonathan Callahan of Cookeville, and Elizabeth (Kevin) Marengo of Cookeville; her aunt, Claudine (Dennis) Tucker of Cookeville, and her uncles, Mickey (Maggie) Carr and Steve Carr, all of Cookeville.
Lisa was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Carolyn Sue Lewis Carr, and her grandparents, Joe and Vera Herren Lewis, as well as Robert and Rosalee Carr. Her family cherishes the memory of her kind-hearted nature and her ability to find happiness in the simplest moments.
Throughout her life, Lisa formed a tapestry of relationships that extended beyond her family. She was known for her gentle spirit and her ability to inspire those around her with her courage and resilience. Her presence was a comforting one, and she will be remembered for her love of life, her faith, and the strength she displayed in the face of adversity.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Denise Dingle and staff, Gentiva Hospice, and the caregivers at NHC of Smithville for their compassionate care and support during Lisa’s final days. Their dedication to her well-being provided comfort not only to Lisa but also to those who loved her.
A funeral service to celebrate Lisa’s life will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 1 pm at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Harris officiating. The service will be a time for friends and family to gather, share memories, and honor the life of a remarkable woman. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Baxter.
Visitation for Lisa Joyce Carr will be on Saturday from 11 am until the time of service at 1 pm, at the funeral home. It will be an opportunity for those whose lives were touched by Lisa to pay their respects and offer comfort to one another.
Lisa’s legacy is one of love, faith, and perseverance. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. As we say goodbye to Lisa, we celebrate the life she lived and the impact she made on her community and beyond.
