Sandy Brown

Sandy Brown, age 64, of Dowelltown, passed away September 12, 2023, at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. She was born October 14, 1958, to her parents the late Joseph and Dorothy Smith Costanza. Sandy was a member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church, worked at Oakton Community College for 28 years, served in the United States Army, a member of the Eastern Star, a Business Woman, a candidate for Assessor of Property when she first moved to DeKalb County, director of the Alexandria Senior Center, a Radio Personality on Wjle with The Ben Herman Radio Program, and a very active person within the community. She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Brown of Dowelltown; son, Robert (Jennifer) Brown of Hermitage; 3 grandchildren, Bobby Brown, Katelyn Brown and Evie Brown; sister Judie Johnson of California. A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 22, 2023, at 1:00 PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Clayton and Family and Friends officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mrs. Sandy. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




Cookie Dean Johnson

September 13, 2023

Cookie Dean Johnson, age 61 of Smyrna, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at her residence. She was a former worker at Smith Port Cabinetry.

Cookie was born on April 24, 1962 in Smithville, TN to her parents, O’Dell Johnson and Ruby Cripps Ervin, who preceded her in death.

Visitation with the Johnson family will be on Thursday from 4pm until 8pm and on Friday from noon until the service time at 2:00pm. Bro. Jack Patterson will officiate with burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, Tim Culwell and brother, Jason Ervin.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Tiffany (Joseph) Redmon of Smithville; 1 son, Travis Melton (Crystal Cunningham) of Sparta; 9 grandchildren, Topanga Patrick, Keirra Patrick, Weston Melton, Willow Melton, Dominic (Brittany) Pasley, Bristol Redmon, Autumn Redmon, Bradley Redmon, and John Redmon; 2 great grandchildren, Blayke and Saylor Pasley; 1 brother, Michael Ervin of Ardmore, TN; and caregiver, Leigh Woodall of Smyrna.

Rita Malone

September 11, 2023

Ms. Rita Malone, age 73 of Liberty, passed away at Quality Care Rehabilitation in Lebanon Saturday, September 9, 2023. She was a previous nurses aide and a member of Covenant Baptist Church.

Ms. Rita was born on July 11, 1950 in McMinnville, TN to her parents, the late Estelle Laws and Alfred Blair. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Malone; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clyde and Pauline Malone; and 1 brother, Kenneth Laws.

Visitation with the Malone family will be on Tuesday from Noon until 8pm and on Wednesday from 10am until the time of service at 2pm. Bro. Bobby Thomason will be officiating and burial will be at Hillview Cemetery.

She is survived by 3 children, Susan (Danny) VanDyne of Liberty, Dale Pack (Yvonne Roberts) of Baxter, Charlotte (Crystal) Malone of Sparta; 8 grandchildren, Brian Pack, Bradley Pack, Cody Pack, Kirstyn (Tristen) Vanatta, Hannah VanDyne, Danny VanDyne, Jr., Nathan Pettit, and Zachary Pettit; 1 great-grandchild, Adalynn Grace Pack; 1 brother, Richard Laws of McMinnville; 1 sister, Phyllis Smith of Woodbury; 1 brother-in-law, Carl (Brenda) Malone of Dowelltown; niece, Cynthia (Ceylon) Taylor; special friends, Aunt Joyce, Aunt Irene, Uncle Clint, Katie Love, Joey Smith, and Josh Smith.

Jeanenne Pettis

September 9, 2023

Jeanenne Pettis of Rockvale, formerly of Smithville, age 87, passed away Friday, September 8, 2023, at Community Care of Rutherford County. She was born January 3, 1936, to her parents, the late Henry Edward and Gertrude Goff Wallsmith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby E. Pettis, Sr.; brother Sonny Wallsmith, and sister, Margaret Bodie. Ms. Pettis was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro and was a Homemaker. She is survived by 2 sons, Bobby ( Melissa) Pettis, Jr. of Murfreesboro, and Tony (Misty) Pettis of Sparta; grandchildren, Jeanette Richey, Jaclyn (Bryan) Saunders, Eric (Alexis) Pettis, Marissa Pettis; step-grandchildren, Jeremiah Ward, Hannah Ward, and Gracie (Josh) Turner; great-grandchildren, Kevin Saunders, Lydia Saunders, Eric Dean Pettis; sister-in-law, Karen Wallsmith; nephews, Charles Bodie and Alan Prine; nieces, Michelle Hatten and Tammy (James) Davis; great niece, MacKinley Davis. Funeral services will be held 11:AM Wednesday September 13, 2023, at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Barry Miller and Bro. Trey Carey officiating and burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Brenda “Gail” Thomason

Brenda “Gail” Thomason, age 69 of Smyrna passed away Wednesday September 6, 2023, at her sister’s home in Smithville. She was born July 7, 1954, to her mother, Pauline Dodd and her late father, Jimmy Lee Thomason. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by step-father, Kenneth Dodd; and brother, Jimmy Wade Thomason. Gail was a member of Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church, and was retired from Nissan. She is survived by her mother, Pauline Dodd of Smithville; 2 sisters, Carolyn Farrar of Murfreesboro, and Janey (Larry) Dickens of Smithville; 2 brothers, Steve (Kathy) Thomason of McMinnville, and Tony (Renee) Thomason of Lebanon; step-mother, Arlene Thomason of Smyrna; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held 12 Noon Saturday, September 9, 2023 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. B, J. Thomason and J. D. Young officiating and burial to follow in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday 3 PM till 6 PM and on Saturday 10:AM until the time of the service at 12:Noon. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




Carlon Lee Mabe

Carlon Lee Mabe age 77, of Smithville passed away Monday, September 4, 2023 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER. He was born June 4, 1946 to his parents, Aaron Louis and Betty Pack Mabe. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Dexter, Jewel, Jerry Wayne and Louis Mabe; 3 sisters, Louise Cantrell, Pauline Billings and Roeina Mabe. Carlon was of the Baptist Faith and worked at Wolf Camera, Dekalb and Tennessee Telephone Company and sold Real Estate. He is survived by wife, Jeanette Mabe of Smithville; daughter, Tressa Lee Parker of Murfreesboro; sister, Linda (Gene) Jones of Sparta; sisters-in-law, Marie Mabe of McMinnville and Hilda (Richard) Crass of Manchester; brothers-in-law, Stacey (Lynn) Adcock, Johnny (Lynn) Adcock, and Kennie (Melissa) Adcock all of Smithville; grandchildren, Jessica Parker, Allen Parker, Victoria Parker; several nieces and nephews; and best friend, Alfred Pedigo. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 2:00Pm at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Johnny Adcock and Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial to follow in Spring Hill Cemetery in Walling, Tn. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 3:00PM till 8:30PM and on Thursday 11:00AM until the time of the service at 2:00PM.
