DeKalb County Track and Field Athletes set Pr’s, Break School Records
Monday night was a successful night for 5 DeKalb County High School Track and Field athletes who all set personal records in the district meet in Cookeville.
Aaron Gottlied and the 4×800 meter relay team (Luke Winkler, Caleb Smith, and Kamrin McLaughlin) finished fourth with a time of 9:50.05. Gottlied went on to compete in the 800 meters placing 3rd with a time of 2:14.39. Gottlied also had a top ten finish in the 1600 meters placing 4th out of 27 runners with a time of 5:04.94.
Ally Beneke anchored the first place victory in the women’s 4×200 meter (Sable Winfree, Kyra Perkins, and Lexi Smart). The team captured the title with a time of 1:54.11. Beneke, the top ranked sophomore high jumper in the state of Tennessee according to TN MileSplit, had a superior night in the high jump beating her own previous school record with a jump of 5.04.00.
Ella VanVranken now holds the Warren County School record in both the 800 meters and 1600 meters. VanVranken beat the school record for the 800 meters Monday night with a third place finish and a time of 2:27.89. She also recorded a second place finish in the 1600 meter race with a time of 5:24.12 falling behind Landri Wilcox the University of Tennessee signee from Cookeville High School.
VanVranken and Cadee Griffith would later team up with Katie Toney and Madalyn Stubblefield to break another Warren County School record in the women’s 4×400 meter race with a time of 4:28.56 The team came in second place behind Cookeville High School (4:26.80).
Cadee Griffith had 2 Top Ten finishes on the night finishing ninth in both the 400 meter and 800 meter races. Griffith improved both times with a time of 1:10.91 in the 400 meter race and a time of 2:50.82 in the 800 meter event.
Maleah Ruch took almost two seconds off her previous time setting a new PR in the 400 meter race with a time of 1:20.90.
This was the third district meet of the year with one more district meet to be held in Cookeville on Tuesday, April 27th. Athletes from 12 high schools competed in the meet representing: York Institute, Clarkrange, Cookeville, Cumberland County, Franklin County, Livingston Academy, Macon County, Oakland, Stone Memorial, Upperman, Warren County, and White County. Tigerettes bring down Lady Owls 11-1
The DeKalb County Tigerettes brought down Smith County 11 to 1 through 5 innings in a girls softball game Monday afternoon in Smithville.
Ellie Cripps held the Lady Owls scoreless through 4 innings in the pitching circle.
Emma Johnson went 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and she drew a walk.
Emma Martin had a triple scoring 3 runs in the 3rdstarting what turned out to be a 9 run inning for the Tigerettes.
DeKalb County scored 1 run in the 1st inning, 9 runs in the 3rd, and 1 run in the 5th inning. Smith County got a run in the 5th inning.
The Tigerettes are 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the district. Smith County drops to 1-9 (1-3)
DeKalb Middle School Golf Team Wins Two
The DeKalb Middle School golf team emerged victorious in a pair of matches last week
to improve their record to 3 wins against 2 losses for the season.
On Tuesday they squared off against the visiting Smith County squad and took the win
without losing a match. Playing for the boys team were Abram Koegler, William Blair,
Jamison Troncoso, Owen Snipes and Ayden Sprague.
The girls team was Alison Poss, Mylie Phillips and Chloe Boyd.
On Friday Smith County returned, along with Watertown for a three team contest.
DeKalb came away with the win avenging an earlier loss to Watertown. The same
lineup competed for DeKalb with the same result.
DeKalb has upcoming matches on Tuesday the 13th against Gladeville and Friday the
16th against Smith and Watertown
DCHS Tennis Teams Defeat Warren County
The DCHS Tennis Teams resumed play in Warren County on Thursday, April 8 after taking a week off for Spring Break. The girls team got the win against the Warren Co. Pioneers 5 to 4. Getting wins in the singles matches were Katie Colwell, Leah Davis, Summer Morse, and Caitlyn Harwell while Colwell and Davis also won their doubles match. The boys didn’t fair as well as they lost to the Pioneers 2-7. Getting wins for the boys were Nathaniel Wessel and the doubles team of Isaac Brown and Brett Walker pulling out the win in a tie-breaker 8-8 (7-5).
Both teams are now 3 wins and 2 losses on the season. The teams have three matches scheduled for next week: At Cannon Co. 4/19, at home Watertown 4/20 and home Cannon Co. 4/22. All matches start at 3:30 and home matches are played at the courts across from Smithville Golf Course.
Johnson’s Walk-off Gives Tigerettes Victory Over Waverly Central
It came down to the wire on Friday, but the DeKalb County Tigerettes took the victory on a dramatic walk-off double in the late innings sealing their victory over Waverly Central in the softball tournament at Waverly. The Tigerettes were down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Emma Johnson doubled on an 0-2 count, scoring two runs.
Waverly Central fired up the offense in the second inning scoring one run when Sadie Vaughn singled.
DeKalb County knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ellie Cripps lined out, scoring one run.
Cripps was the winning pitcher for DeKalb County. She went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two.
Shelby Baker took the loss for Waverly Central. Baker went six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five.
