Don “Monk” Bain

Mr. Don “Monk” Bain, age 66 of Alexandria, TN, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at the Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro, TN after a lengthy stay at Summit Hospital in Hermitage, TN.

Mr. Bain was born June 2, 1953 in Lebanon, TN, a son of the late Buddy Bass Bain and Mattie Bell Dodd Bain. He was also preceded in death by Sister; Gladys Anita Hayes and Two Brothers; William Andy Bain and Buddy Otis Bain.

Mr. Bain started working working construction at 18 years old. He was a member of the Laborers International Union of North American Local Chapter #386 for 45 years. He retired from the Gallatin Steam Plant in October of 2015. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Bain was a member of the First Baptist Church, Alexandria and attended the Hickman Baptist Church.

Mr. Bain is survived by two Children; Billy Joe (Juli) Bain of Beech Grove, TN, and Christopher Lee (Amanda) Bain of Alexandria, TN. Two Grandchildren; Wyatt Christopher Bain and Jayden Daniel Bain. Five Step-grandchildren; Kenneth Morton, Jr, Richard Dietz, Sean McSwain, Connor McSwain, and Ashley Totherow. Three step great-grandchildren; Jed, Avery, and Addelyn. Two Sisters; Jean (Richard) Hackett of Gordonsville, TN, and Francis Jordan of Mt. Juliet, TN. Mother of his children; Leona Jane Bain of Sykes, TN.

Funeral Services for Mr. Bain are scheduled to be conducted from the Avant Funeral Home on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 1PM with Bro. Richard Hackett officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillview Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be at the Avant Funeral Home on Friday from 1PM until 8PM and on Saturday from 10AM until service time at 1PM.




Shirley Elizabeth Beckham

February 7, 2020

Shirley Elizabeth Beckham age 82 of Smithville passed away Thursday night, February 6, 2020 at her residence. She was born May 11, 1937 to her parents, the late Carroll Barr and Goldia Bardmess Barr Hulvey. Mrs. Beckham was preceded in death by 2 sons, Kenneth and Jerry Beckham; 2 sisters, Beverly Rogers and Norma Jean Leadlove and 1 brother, Eugene Barr. She was a restaurant owner, member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Shirley is survived by her husband of 68 years, Marvin Beckham of Smithville; grandchildren, Nikki Beckham, Jennifer Chapman, J.J. Beckham, Chase Beckham, Chesney (Blake) Ayers, DJ Crews, and Matthew Exum; great-grandchildren, Brady Hughes, Carleigh Beckham, Whitleigh Chapman, Lily Beckham and Emma Beckham; adopted daughter, Vickey (Dan) Crews; special family, Debbie Driver of Smithville and Robin Beckham of Cookeville; 2 nieces, Angela (Jeff) Law and Cyndi (Danny) Niles and special caregiver, Stephanie Chivers. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2020 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Larry Steffee and Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday 12 Noon until 8 p.m. and Monday 11:AM until the time of the service at 2 p.m.. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the DeKalb Animal Coalition, in memory of Mrs. Shirley.




Penny Ann Hale

Penny Ann Hale age 58 of Smithville, passed away Wednesday morning, February 5, 2020 at St. Thomas Midtown in Nashville. She was born December 10, 1961 to her parents, Carolyn Elmore and the late Eugene Wilkey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Eugena Renee Wilkey and 2 sisters-in-law, Clara Wilkey and Cynthia Hale. She was a Baptist and worked at Tenneco. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Leroy Hale of Smithville; 4 children, Frank (Amber) Wilkey, Carolyn Hale, Angela (Logan) Murphy, Leroy “Chip” Amanda) Hale all of Smithville; grandchildren, Brylie and Kenley Wilkey, Ariana Keith, TJ Bratcher, Emma and Elena Murphy, Mikeal (Destiny) Wooden all of Smithville, LeAnn ( Scott) Wright of Alabama, Josh and Monica Carlton and Megan Cunningham all of Smithville; great-grandchildren, Carsen Wooden, Makayla, Austin, Christian, Brooklyn, Oaklynn and Madison Wright; mother, Carolyn Wilkey Davis of Smithville; brothers and sisters, Phillip Wilkey of Smithville, Connie (David) Brownfield of Ohio, Ellen (Charlie) Hale, Ginger (David) Smith, Roy Wilkey and Candy (John) Hale all of Smithville; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, February 9, 2020 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Brad Murphy officiating and burial will follow in Peeled Chestnut Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Sunday 10:AM until the time of the service at 2 p.m. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Beverly Jean Moore

February 5, 2020

Mrs. Beverly Jean Moore, age 69 of Smithville passed away Monday, February 3, 2020 at the NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Moore was born January 17, 1951 in McMinnville, TN the daughter of the late Eugene & Elizabeth Poss Moore. She attended the Faith Baptist Church and was formerly a caretaker.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 2pm from the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Al Mahan will officiate with burial to follow at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, February 8th from 12noon until the service time at 2pm

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene & Elizabeth Poss Moore and an infant daughter, Bridgett Batey. Survivors include her brother, Larry & Vickie Moore of Jasper, AL. Sister, Kathy Hale of Jonesboro, GA. 5 Nephews & Nieces, Nathan Moore & Jessica Moore both of Jasper, AL, Jerre R. Jason Hale of Winder, GA, Amanda Hale of Jonesboro, GA, Sara Greene of Easley, SC. 8 Grand Nieces & Nephews and 1 Great Grand Niece. Special Friend, Denise Mahan of Smithville.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Lighthouse Christian Camp in memory of Mrs. Beverly.

Danny Parsley

Danny Parsley age 64 of Smithville, passed away Monday night, February 3, 2020 at his residence. He was born May 6, 1955 to his parents, the late Delton and Nell Webb Parsley. Danny was a member of Buckner’s Chapel United Methodist Church and worked at Carrier for many years. Danny loved music and taught many students through the years in guitar. He is survived by his son, Daniel Parsley and fiancé, Angelica of McMinnville; 2 sisters, Debbie (Van) Mathis of Liberty and Libby (Jerry) McCormick of Smithville; 1 brother, Jeff (Michelle) Parsley of Smithville; nieces and nephews, Eric Mathis, Pamela Delay, Adrienne McCormick, Ashley McCormick, Katy Jumper, Kevin Parsley, Kameron Parsley, Kelly Neal, Kimberly Parsley, Jack Good and Abby Watson; mother of his son, Donna Parsley of Smithville; several great nieces and nephews and 1 great-great niece. The family has chosen a direct cremation, a Memorial Service will be held 5 P.M. Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Van Mathis officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday 3 P.M. until the time of the memorial service at 5 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. Dr. Harold David Maxwell

February 5, 2020

Dr. Harold David Maxwell, age 75, of Lumberton, NC passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. He was born in Smithville, TN to the late Toy Maxwell and the late Helen Brown Maxwell Carter. He will be remembered for his many years as a biology professor at UNC-Pembroke.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Putty.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Windom Maxwell of the home; a son, James Garfield Suggs II and wife Tiffany of Shelby, NC; two daughters, Robin Perrone and husband Dave of Charlotte, NC and Vivian Suzanne Britt and husband Michael of Orrum, NC; four grandchildren: Chelsea Suggs, Austin Suggs, Haleigh McClure, and Elizabeth Parker; one great-grandson, Aislan McClure; and a brother, Ronald Brown Maxwell and wife Judy of Killen, AL.

The family of Dr. David Maxwell deeply appreciates and gratefully acknowledges your kind expressions of sympathy. Your tributes to the memory of David have brought us much comfort. There are those whose lives death cannot diminish. Their love radiates forever in the hearts of family, friends and colleagues. We felt that love in your thoughtfulness as you shared your memories and experiences with us.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at 1:00 PM at Whorton Springs Cemetery in Smithville, TN.

In lieu of flowers, the family would cherish donations to a scholarship to be announced at a later time by the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
