Bobby Earl Cook

October 4, 2023

Mr. Bobby Earl Cook, age 79 of Liberty, passed away Tuesday night at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. He was a self-employed farmer.

Mr. Cook was born on March 17, 1944 in Liberty. His parents were Palmer and Maggie Bell Herman Cook who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by 1 brother, Roger Cook.

Visitation with the Cook family will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 and on Friday from 10:00 until the service at 1:00 in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Leonard Herman will officiate and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include two sisters, Betty Owen and Kathy (Jerry) Cook all of Woodbury, 1 brother, John Cook of McMinnville, nieces and nephews also survive.




Aubrey Junior Wright

October 1, 2023

Mr. Aubrey Junior Wright, age 77 of Smithville, passed away Saturday morning, September 30, 2023, at his residence. He was a member of the  Smithville Church of Christ, retired from Federal Mogul and a butcher in his younger years with Wright’s Grocery. He was a lifetime member of the DeKalb County Rescue Squad, an avid Vanderbilt Commodores sports fan and loved fishing and hunting.

He was born on June 9, 1946 in Smithville, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Aubrey and Lear Pack Wright, 1 brother, Jerry Wright and 1 sister, Linda Wright.

Visitation with the Wright family will be on Wednesday from 11:00 to 8:00 and on Thursday from 10:00 until service time at 1:00 in the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Dan Gulley will be officiating. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Jo Wright, 2 daughters, Teena (James) Allen and Misty (Jason) Poss all of Smithville, 3 grandchildren, Matthew (Susan Marie) Poss, Nathan (Brittney) Gard all of Smithville and Ben and Traci Gard of VA, 6 great-grandchildren, Paityn, Mckenlee, Addison, Logan, Reese and Axel, 2 sisters, Eva Dean (Jim) Kennedy of Hendersonville and Judy Wright of Smithville, 2 sisters-in-law, Willette Hale and Joyce Hale both of Alexandria.

In addition to flowers the family has asked that donations please be made to Church of Christ Youth Group and DeKalb Co. Rescue Squad.

Norma Sexton Hancock

September 30, 2023

Norma Sexton Hancock, age 84 of Smithville, TN passed away at her home on September 29, 2023. Born in Mullins Cove, Tennessee, Ms. Hancock was preceded in death by her parents Gordon and Elizabeth Sexton of Jasper, Tennessee. Ms. Hancock was also preceded in death by a brother, Grady Sexton.

A faithful Christian from the age of 11, Ms. Hancock was a dedicated leader and promoter of Acteens, The Women’s Missionary Union, The Salem Baptist Association and a member of First Baptist Church in Smithville, Tennessee.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dan Hancock; daughters DeLynne (Tim) Burgess of Hendersonville, and Sharon Hancock of Nashville; sons Jeff Hancock of Dover and Wade (Mary Helen) Hancock of Smithville; and grandchildren Emma and Grady Lee Hancock whom she loved dearly.

Visitation with the family will be at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville on Sunday, October 1st from 2-6 pm and on Monday from 11 am-12:30 pm. There will be a graveside service on Monday October 2nd at 1pm at Prosperity Cemetery. The graveside will be an open service.

In addition to flowers, donations can be made to Lottie Moon or Gideon’s in memory of Mrs. Norma.

Gary L. Durham

September 29, 2023

Mr. Gary L. Durham passed away at his residence on Thursday evening, September 28, 2023 . He was an Air Force veteran and worked in sales with Nortel where he retired. He enjoyed golfing and had a love for dogs.

Mr. Durham was born on November 28, 1940 in Bay City, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Thelma Waddington Durham, 1 daughter, Kari Booth and 1 brother, Keith Durham.

Visitation with the Durham family will be on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 11:00 until the service at 2:00 at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Rev. Terry Little will officiate and burial will follow in Mt. Holly Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Nancy Durham of Smithville, 1 daughter, Tami Strong of FL, 1 son, Todd (Dana) Durham of GA, 3 grandchildren, Austin Durham and Ashley (Leighton) Stegmayer all of GA and Dehryen (Lacy) Noriega of CO, 1 great-grandchild, and 1 son-in-law, John Booth of FL.

In addition to flowers the family has requested that donations please be made to DeKalb Animal Coalition or Tunnels to Towers.

John Wilson Foster

September 29, 2023

John Wilson Foster of Statesville, formerly of Smithville, age 83 passed away at his residence on September 27, 2023. He was born July 26, 1940, to his parents the late Alvie Rosco and Mattie Lee Puckett Foster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Foster; sister, Juanita Redmon; brother, Rosco Foster. Mr. Foster He was affiliated with Smith Fork Baptist Church and Buckners Chapel Methodist Church and worked at Auto Body Work. He is survived by children, Tony Foster of Statesville, and Annette Foster of PA; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sister Joyce Hall of Statesville. Funeral services will be Monday October 2, 2023, at 2:00PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial to follow in Burton-Ponder Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday October 2, 2023 11:00AM until the time of the service at 2:00PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.




Wanda Nell Teachman Gard

Wanda Nell Teachman Gard age 90 of Smithville, was born September 11, 1933, in Lamont, OK to her parents, the late Edward H. and Neva Mae Cowan Teachman, and went to heavenly reward on Thursday September 28, 2023, at her residence. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darwin Gard, 7 brothers, Edward, Lawrence, George, Blain, Harold, Carl and Doug; 2 sisters, Geneva and Lora Jane. Mrs. Wanda was a faithful member of Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church, Eastern Star for over 70 years, Senior Citizens, Ladies Who Lunch and Women on Missions. She loved her family and supported them in their activities. She didn’t let her age stop her, she loved traveling with family and her church. Mrs. Wanda leaves behind to cherish her memory, 4 children, Denise (Rick) Holcomb, Karla (Bo) Warrick and Michele (Pete) Roller all of Smithville and Bill (Susan) Gard of Murfreesboro; 10 grandchildren, Sarah (Joe) Sledge, Ashle (Michael) Wiley, Rachel Holcomb (Mitchell), Samantha (Michael) Rohling, Johnna Roller (Brandon), Kaitlyn Roller, Nathan (Brittney) Gard, Ben (Traci) Gard, Brooke (David) Nickens, Bryce (Ashley) Gard; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Twylah (Bob) Alameda and Edrie Zwiers and sisters-in-law, Barbara Teachman and Sherri Gard; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family has honored Mrs. Wanda’s request to be cremated. Memorial Services and Eastern Star Service will be 6 PM Monday, October 16, 2023, at Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church with Bros. Dwayne Cornelius, Scott Pack and Bill Robertson. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, October 16 4:PM until 6 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
