David Earl “Squirrel” Bain

Mr. David Earl “Squirrel” Bain age 59 of McMinnville, TN, died Sunday, May 08, 2022. He was born December 24, 1962 (he often quoted to those he was close to ‘my birthday’s coming up’), in McMinnville, TN, was a self-employed nurseryman and provided lawncare services throughout the community. He grew up in the Dibrell and Short Mountain area, attended the People’s Baptist Church as a youth and later attended Friendship Baptist Church and Smartt First Baptist Church. Squirrel was often described as ‘One of a Kind’. He was a good judge of character, loved his family and children most of all, was proud to be a grandfather, and enjoyed aggravating those he cared most about. Mr. Bain was preceded in death by his parents Jack Smith Bain and Francis Irene Self Bain, brother Charles Lee Bain, sister Jackie Dianne Bain Roberts, and nephew Jacob King.

Survivors include his wife of 31 years Linda Taylor Bain, daughter Andrea Bain Hillis and her husband Chris Hillis, son Taylor Bain and his wife Morgan Thaxton-Bain, granddaughter Navie Michele Bain, brothers Joe Darrell (Tonya) Bain and Marlon Smith (Gail) Bain, special friend Cody Cantrell, many cherished friends and family members, and several loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Funeral service will be 3:30 P.M. Thursday, May 12, 2022 at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Johnny Paul Newby and Larry Self will officiate. Interment will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and again on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until 3:30 P.M. at McMinnville Funeral Home.




Jimmy Dwayne Evans

May 9, 2022

Mr. Jimmy Dwayne Evans, age 61 of Smithville, TN passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022 at his residence.

Mr. Evans was born on January 24, 1961 in Smithville, TN to his parents, the late Charles & Frankie Jo Stewart Evans. A Brother, Gary Evans also precedes him in death. He was retired from Nissan and was a Christian. Jimmy served in the National Guard when he was younger.

The family has chosen cremation. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later time.

Survivors include 5 Brothers, Larry (Jannie) Evans of Smithville, TN, Danny (Diane) Evans of Cannon County, TN, Ronnie (Carolyn) Evans of Smithville, TN, Eddie (Julie) Evans of Rockwood, TN, Frank (Darlene) Evans of Smithville, TN & Wanda (Roger) Bradford of Smithville, TN. Several Nieces & Nephews also survive.

U.L. LaFever

Mr. U.L. LaFever, age 76 of DeKalb County, TN passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Stones River St. Thomas Hospital in Woodbury, TN.

Mr. LaFever was born on July 11, 1945 in DeKalb County, TN to his parents, the late Verble & Lula Dunn LaFever. Also preceding him in death is a daughter-in-law, Dana Purkey LaFever. Mr. LaFever had retired as the Owner/Operator of Center Hill Sports Marine & was a member of the Rescue Squad.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 2pm from the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Tim Bumbalough will officiate with burial to follow at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Friday from 2pm-8pm & Saturday from 11am until the time of services at 2pm.

Survivors include his Wife of over 50 years, Helen Perry LaFever of Smithville, TN. Son, Eugene LaFever of Sparta, TN. Granddaughter, Sahara “Sara Beth” LaFever of Smithville, TN. Sister, Louisa (Jack) Phelps of Nashville, TN. Brother, Calvin Urias LaFever (Merle Sandlin) of Smithville, TN. Sister-in-law, Sue (Jimmy) Bryson of Donelson, TN.

Mrs. Joeneal Green Colwell

May 4, 2022

Mrs. Joeneal Green Colwell age 80 of Rock Island passed away Tuesday at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro.

Mrs. Colwell was a retired seamstress with Form Fit Rogers and a member of New Union The Baptist Church for 48 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Colwell and her parents, William Bertram & Elsie Maureen Jones Green.

Visitation with the Colwell family will be on Wednesday from 3:30 to 8:00 at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home and on Thursday at New Union The Baptist Church from 10:00 until service time at 1:00. Bro. Keith Sims & Bro. Darrell Cantrell will officiate and burial will be in New Union Cemetery.

Survivors include 1 daughter, Linda (Joshua) Parris, 1 son, Henry Lee (Kathy) Colwell, 3 grandchildren, Heather Michelle Colwell, Patrick Lee Cowell & Carl Andrew Parris all of Rock Island, sister-in-law- Patty (Jerry) Cantrell and brother-in-law, Eddie Colwell all of Smithville. Several nieces & nephews also survive.

The family has asked that donations please be made to the Dibrell Memorial Museum to help with a new roof.

Paul Eddie Starnes

Mr. Paul Eddie Starnes, age 71, of Alexandria, TN, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022.

Mr. Starnes was born September 20, 1950 in Lebanon, TN, a son of the late Curtis Starnes and Virginia “Jim” Nixon Starnes. He was also preceded in death by Sisters; Barbara Jane Carter and Paula Thompson and Brother; Jimmy Lynn Thompson. Mr. Starnes married Beverly Schaub on November 24, 1972. He was a longtime member of the Lower Helton The Baptist Church.

Mr. Starnes is survived by Wife of 49 years; Beverly Starnes of Alexandria, TN. Son; Brandon Starnes. Grandchildren; Makayla (Oscar) Soto of Parsons, TN, Graci Starnes of McMinnville, TN, and Auna Leigh Grace Starnes of Alexandria, TN. Great-grandchild; Alyxander Soto. Siblings; Joe Don Starnes of Carthage, TN, Terry Starnes of Temperance Hall, TN, and Pamela Rackley of McMinnville, TN. Sister-in-Law; Patricia Thompson of Silver Point, TN.

Funeral Services for Mr. Starnes are scheduled to be conducted from the Avant Funeral Home on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 1PM with Bro. Eric Wood and Bro. Gary Glover officiating. Interment will follow in the Gordonsville Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be at the Avant Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4PM until 8PM and on Thursday after 10AM until service time at 1PM.

The family requests memorials be made to the Lower Helton The Baptist Church.




Betty Lou Jones

April 30, 2022

Mrs. Betty Lou Jones age 85 of McMinnville, TN, died Thursday, April 28, 2022, at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro, TN. She was born on May 20, 1936, in Smithville, TN, grew up in the Keltonburg community, was a former employee of McMinnville Garment Factory and McMinnville Funeral Home, and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Betty was affectionately known as “Gaga” by her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Kelley and Allie Moore Judkins, husband Thurman Ray “Jack” Jones, and brothers Nelson Judkins and Bobby Joe Judkins.

Survivors include her children Jimmy D. Jones (Connie Bell) and Jerry Jones, former daughter-in-law Gail Jones, sister-in-law Lounette Judkins, grandchildren Andrea Jones (Tyler Young), Daniel (Heather) Jones, Emilie (Codie) Phifer, and Kellie Jones (Cody Hayes), and great-grandchildren Kaidence Crouch, Konnor Crouch, Kamryn Crouch, Lea Blake, Luci Blake, Saylor Gojkovic, Hudson Jones, and Allison Hayes. Many other family members and family friends also survive.

Funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, May 01, 2022 at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Phillip Rowland, R.C. Christian, and Ricky Arnold will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. The Jones family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Saturday and again from 12:00 PM until the time of service on Sunday at McMinnville Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gideon Bible Memorial Program or to Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro, TN.
