DCHS Basketball Season Opens Soon
The DCHS basketball season gets underway next month as the Tigers and Lady Tigers travel to Van Buren County on Tuesday, November 19 for the kickoff of Hall of Fame week and they will host Pickett County on Saturday, November 23. Action each night starts with the girls game at 6 p.m.

DCHS XC Teams Finish Well in Region 3 Large School Meet
The DCHS Cross Country teams traveled to Cookeville on Tuesday to compete in the Region 3 Large school Cross Country Meet.
There were many personal records (PR’s) on this tough course and the boys team finished 10th out of 17 teams. Aaron Gottlied finished 10th overall earning him a spot in the TSSAA State XC meet on November 2. This is a huge accomplishment for Aaron who is a freshman and also had to compete against runners from much larger schools. The runners times were:

DMS Cross Country Girls Earn All-State Honors
On a chilly and rainy afternoon, the DMS cross country teams spent Saturday, October 19th battling it out with 31 of the best teams at the Tennessee State XC Middle School Championships. The race was held at Victor Ashe Park in Knoxville, where over a field of 300 runners in each male and female division competed on the hilly and challenging 2.1 mile course.
This marks the second year in a row that both the DMS boys and girls teams qualified for the State Championship Meet.
Coming off of a 14th place team finish in 2018, the Lady Saints fought hard for an overall and much deserving 5th place team finish this season which earned them All-State Honors. Only the top 5 teams are awarded this.
The Saints boys team gave outstanding individual performances and placed 20th out of a field of 32 teams this season. They edged out West Wilson and Macon Co Jr. who had beaten them at the Regional Meet the weekend before.
With her first season of running cross country as a middle schooler, Ella Van Vranken led the Lady Saints with a 12th place overall finish and a time of 13:04, which landed her as a member of the All-State Individual Team. Mya Ruch, now a senior at DCHS was the first DeKalb Middle runner to earn this honor back in 2014, and 2015.
With Van Vranken in the top 20, the Varsity girls showed outstanding performances from their top 5 with each one placing in the top 77 of the 306 runners. Zoe Keys finishing 43rd 13:47, Katherine Knowles 64th 14:07, Mylie Phillips 14:12, Madeline Martin 77th 14:13, Sydney Polk 252nd 1636, and Maleah Ruch 259th 16:46.
In the boys Varsity race, Kaleb Spears led his team with a 61st place finish and a PR of 12:46, followed close behind by Caleb Gray 108th 13:13, Ian Colwell 124th 13:20, Cale Brown 246th 14:35, Dylan Cathey 280th 14:55, Sam Harris 314th 15:37, and Carson Tramel 329th 16:35.
In the JV race, the DMS boys and girls, some of them first time XC members, had some of their best times of the season. In a field of 134 runners, Candice Rico placed 56th 17:27, Sylvia Evans 83rd 18:33, Sadie Moore 85th 18:34, Cadence Reynolds 103rd, 19:42. The boys field consisted of 240 runners. Evan Carmichael was 146th 16:51, Ethan Spears 181st 17:32, Jackson Hodges 190th 17:52, and Mason Taylor 213th 19:31.
“The competition keeps growing and growing each year. This State Meet produced some of the fastest times that I’ve seen as a coach since 2014. This group of student-athletes rose to the occasion and left it all out on the course, It’s been amazing to watch how they mentally and physically have seen it through all season long. I saw some awesome achievements this season from each one of these runners.”
Tigers Improve Region Standing with Win over Macon County
Finding themselves down 13-6 at halftime, the DCHS Tigers shutout visiting Macon County 20-0 in the second half for a 26-13 senior night victory in Smithville Friday evening.
DeKalb County, now 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in the region, is poised to finish as the region runner-up if it can knock off Cumberland County at Crossville to close out the regular season on Friday, November 1. The Jets are 0-8 and 0-3 in the region. A win there would guarantee the Tigers a first round state play-off home game on November 8.
Macon County scored first Friday night on a 14 yard touchdown run by Cameron Houston with 1:02 left in the 1st period capping a 63 yard drive. The PAT attempt by Ryan Underwood was no good but Macon County led 6-0.
DeKalb County answered with 5:22 left in the 2nd period as Tiger quarterback Axel Aldino found Desmond Nokes on a 67 yard pass play for a touchdown. Kicker Alan Munoz slipped on the PAT try and failed to connect but the game was tied at 6-6.
Seconds before halftime, Macon County blocked a Tiger punt and then scored on the next play as Cameron Mercer caught a 14 yard pass from quarterback Jon Mark Gammons for a touchdown with 23.4 seconds remaining. Underwood converted the PAT and Macon County led 13-6 at halftime.
Late in the 3rd period DeKalb County’s Isaac Knowles intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it to the Macon County 18 yard line. Alan Munoz then caught the game trying touchdown pass from Aldino with 55 seconds left in the quarter. The PAT by Munoz was good and the game was tied at 13-13.
In the 4th period, DeKalb County capped a 94 yard drive with a touchdown as Aldino again hooked up with Desmond Nokes this time for 50 yards and a score. The extra point attempt by Munoz was blocked but DeKalb County had its first lead at 19-13 with 4:24 left in the game. Nathaniel Crook had a big play in the drive getting the ball to near midfield aided by a Macon County penalty just before the Tigers’ struck for the score.
DeKalb County then put the game out of reach as Nathaniel Crook scored on a 19 yard touchdown run with 2:47 left in the 4th period capping a Tiger 53 yard drive, Munoz added the extra point and DeKalb County prevailed 26-13.
With the loss Macon County drops to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in the region. Although both DeKalb and Macon are currently tied for 2nd place in the region at 2-1 DC owns the tie breaker.
It’s a bye week for DeKalb County next week as students are off for fall break. Again, DeKalb County will close out the regular season at Cumberland County on Friday, November 1st. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. and WJLE will broadcast LIVE.

Anna Chew Finishes 7th in State at TSSAA Large School Golf Tournament
The TSSAA held their large school state golf tournament this week at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester and Anna Chew represented DCHS after qualifying at the regional tournament in Cookeville last week.
Chew, a senior, fired a 73 on Tuesday which put her in 2nd place and on Wednesday she shot a 78 which made her plus 7 for the tournament finishing in 7th place. Anna had won both the district and region tournaments before advancing to state.

“I am so proud of Anna. She represented DeKalb County very well taking on some of the best high school golfers in the state of Tennessee. Her game has gotten better and better over her four years as part of the program and she had really shined here in the post season her senior year. I really feel like her best golf is in front of her as she heads off to college to play at the next level. This week at the state tournament she showed a fighter spirit and hung tough against great competition,” said Tiger Golf Coach John Pryor.
Anna has committed to play college golf at Trevecca Nararene University.
Meanwhile Lynn Lim of Station Camp won the tournament with a 2 day score of 144. Lim has already committed to play collegiate golf at Vanderbilt University.
