The National Football League’s Tennessee Titans are honoring Steve Trapp of DeKalb County as their Coach of the Week. Trapp is in his 16th season as the head coach of the Tigers.

After a 1-3 start this season, Trapp and his team have won five straight heading into next week’s game against Cumberland County. This past Friday’s 24-20 win against Macon County gave the Tigers their first region title in school history. Last season, DeKalb County advanced to the Class 4A state quarterfinals.

Trapp’s program will receive a $1,000 donation courtesy of the Titans Foundation, plus he is now in the running for the 2020 Titans’ Coach of the Year Award.

Tiger fans cast votes online last week to make the DeKalb County-Macon County showdown the Titans High School Football Game of the Week.

The DeKalb County High School Tigers will wrap up their regular season at home Friday night, October 30 hosting winless Cumberland County.

Kick-off will be at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

Regardless of the outcome the Tigers have already secured the Region 3 championship and will host a first round state play-off game on November 6.

DeKalb County has beaten Stone Memorial 31-30, Grundy County 32-0, Cannon County 49-7, Livingston Academy 38-14, Smith County 42-7 and Macon County 24-20. The Tigers’ losses have been to Warren County 30-24, Upperman 27-21, and to Watertown 21-14.

Cumberland County (0-9) has lost to Scott 20-12, White County 45-12, Livingston Academy 7-0, Clay County 46-20, Macon County 48-7, Walker Valley 47-7, Rockwood 1-0 (forfeit) due to COVID-19, Stone Memorial 1-0 (forfeit) due to COVID-19, and Bledsoe County 40-19.

The DeKalb County Tigers clinched an historic regular season football championship of Class 4A Region 3 Friday night with a thrilling 24 to 20 come from behind win in the closing seconds of the game at Macon County.

Except for a meeting in two weeks against the winless Cumberland County Jets, DeKalb County has run the table at 3-0 in the region and owns the tiebreakers over both Macon County and Livingston Academy should the Tigers lose in the regular season finale at home against Crossville on October 30.

The moment is historic in that it’s the first region title for a DCHS Tiger football team in the school’s 57 year history. The distinction also assures the team of a first round home state play-off game in three weeks.

It wasn’t easy.

After playing to a scoreless tie through the first period, the Tigers grabbed the lead in the 2nd period and held onto it until late in the 4th quarter when Macon County scored a go ahead touchdown. But with 45 seconds left, DC completed a game winning scoring drive and then later stopped Macon County on a 4th down quarterback sack to seal the victory.

DeKalb County’s first score came on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Axel Aldino to Desmond Nokes, capping a 9 play 63 yard drive with 3:43 left in the 2nd period. Kicker Jasper Kleparek came on for the PAT and the Tigers led 7-0.

Macon County answered with 2:18 left in the 2nd period on a 9 yard touchdown run by Hunter Herron, capping a 60 yard drive. Cameron Houston failed to connect on the PAT but Macon County got on the board trailing DC 7 to 6.

On their next possession, the DC Tigers struck quickly as Aldino found Nokes on a pass play good for 60 yards and a touchdown with 2:03 left in the half. Kleparek added the extra point and DeKalb County took a 14-6 lead.

Macon County then mounted a 66 yard touchdown scoring drive which Quarterback Braydee Brooks completed on a 3 yard keeper to cut the DC lead to 14 to 12 after Macon County’s 2 point conversion attempt to tie the game failed with 6 seconds left before halftime.

Neither team scored in the 3rd period but in the 4th DeKalb County expanded its lead to 17-12 on a 34 yard field goal by kicker Jasper Kleparek.

Macon County then got the ball and drove down the field scoring on a 4 yard touchdown run to give them their first and only lead of the game. The 2 point conversion was good on a pass from Brooks to Herron and Macon County pulled ahead 20-17 with just over 3 minutes left in the game.

DeKalb County started its last drive of the night from its own 25 yard line and drove 10 plays before Aldino found Nokes on a 14 yard game winning touchdown scoring pass play with 45 seconds remaining on the clock. Kleparek knocked home the extra point and DeKalb County went on to win 24-20.

DeKalb County has an open date next Friday, October 23 but will complete the regular season at home against winless Cumberland County in two weeks on October 30. WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

The DeKalb County Tigers brought down the Smith County Owls 42 to 7 at Carthage Friday night to improve their overall season record to 5-3. The Owls drop to 2-5

The Tigers will travel to Macon County (6-1, 2-0) Friday night, October 16 where a win coupled with a season finale victory at home over Cumberland County (0-8, 0-3) on October 30 would give the program its first ever regular season region title in school history.

In the game Friday night, the Tigers struck first as Quarterback Axel Aldino scored on a 19 yard touchdown run with 4:41 left in the 1st period capping a 72 yard drive. Jasper Kleparek booted the extra point and DeKalb County led 7-0.

Evan Jones gave the Tigers a two score advantage as he caught an 11 yard touchdown pass from Aldino with 11:54 left in the 2nd period capping a 78 yard drive. Kleparek added the extra point and DC led 14-0

Smith County got on the board with 9:45 left in the 2nd period as Quarterback Johnny Lyda raced 42 yards for the endzone capping a 68 yard drive. Salomon Rodriguez tacked on the extra point and the Owls trailed 14-7.

DeKalb County expanded its lead with 7:42 left in the half on a 22 yard run by Aldino capping a 53 yard drive. Kleparek’s extra point was good and the Tigers were up 21-7.

The Tigers took advantage of a blocked Smith County punt as Colby Barnes scored from 10 yards out with 5:06 left in the 2nd period. Kleparek added the PAT and DC held a 28-7 lead.

Barnes got his second touchdown of the night on an 84 yard run with 11:36 left in the 3rd period. Kleparek booted the extra point and DeKalb County owned a 35-7 lead.

Aldino got the last score of the game on a 41 yard touchdown run with 5:28 left in the 3rd period. The kick by Kleparek was good and the Tigers went on to claim a 42-7 victory.

The DeKalb County Tigers capped off Homecoming Week with a 38-14 win over the Livingston Academy Wildcats Friday night in Smithville.

The Tigers improve to 4-3 on the season and remain tied with Macon County at 2-0 in the race for the regular season region championship. With the loss Livingston Academy drops to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the region.

Livingston Academy’s quarterback Nate Cowgill had a tough night against the black and gold as the Tiger defense intercepted him five times during the game. The first LA turnover came on their first possession as Axel Aldino picked him off setting up a Tiger touchdown five plays later.

Aldino himself scored on an 11 yard quarterback keeper with 7:34 left in the 1st period to give DC an early 7-0 lead along with Jasper Kleparek’s extra point.

After forcing a punt on LA’s second possession, the Tigers scored two plays later on a touchdown pass from Aldino to Isaac Knowles covering 71 yards for a touchdown. Kleparek added the extra point and the Tigers led 14-0 with 4:27 left in the 1st period.

DeKalb County mounted an 88 yard scoring drive in the second period with Aldino finding the endzone on a 1 yard QB keeper with 8:02 left in the half. Kleparek converted the PAT and the Tigers led 21-0.

By halftime DeKalb County had extended its lead to 24-0 after Kleparek knocked home a 21 yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the 2nd period.

The Tigers cashed in on another LA turnover in the 3rd period. After an interception by Desmond Nokes, DC made the Wildcats pay on a 10 yard touchdown run by QB Aldino with 3:33 left Kleparek’s kick was good and the Tigers held a 31-0 advantage.

LA put the ball in the air again in the 4th quarter and Silas Cross was there to pick it off leading to the Tigers final scoring drive of the game. Aldino found Nokes on a 41 yard pass play for a touchdown, capping a 56 yard drive with 11:51 left and with the PAT by Kleparek the Tigers owned a 38-0 lead.

The Wildcats got two touchdowns late in the game. The first on a pass play from Raven Carpenter to Jayden Lawrence covering 66 yards for the score with 8:02 left in the game. The PAT by Mitchell Watson was good and the Tiger lead was trimmed to 38-7.

LA then recovered an on side kick and scored on a 51 yard touchdown pass play from QB Nate Cowgill to Jayden Lawrence with 7:47 left in the game. Watson’s PAT was good but the Tigers went on to win 38-14.

The Tigers will step outside the region Friday night, October 9 for a meeting with the Smith County Owls (2-4) in Carthage. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.
