Robert “Bob” Medley, Jr.

Mr. Robert “Bob” Medley, Jr. age 78 of Smithville, TN passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital.

Bob was born on March 19, 1943 in Smithville, TN to his parents, the late Robert Sr. and Clara Driver Medley. Born and raised in Smithville, he loved to entertain family and friends with tales of past times. Bob was a proud United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. After moving to Iowa he met Barb and they created a beautiful life life together. They raised both Bob’s children as well as many other young adults in need of loving homes.

Bob spent many years in Iowa as an Ironworker and Estimater. In 1993 Barb and Bob packed up for a new life adventure together back in Smithville, TN as cattle farmers. After many years, he retired from S&W Manufacturing to live out his life dream of living in a log cabin on Center Hill Lake. During his retirement on the lake, he loved giving friends and family rides on the bass and pontoon boats.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Ray Allen Medley and a sister, Mary Pearl Hooper. Survivors include his wife Barb Medley of Smithville, TN. Son, Steven Medley and a daughter, Jeana Medley Osborne. Grandchildren, Kristen York, Megan Kelsey, Samantha Brown, Ashton Kindhart & Ben Medley. 11 Great Grandchildren & many beloved nieces & nephews.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 5pm at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, from 4pm until the service time at 5pm. Family and friends will officiate.




Sara Marie Garrett

June 22, 2021

The Mountain has claimed the last of the family born and raised in the Hales Half Acre log cabin. Sara Marie Garrett, 86, passed away June 21, 2021 and will join her husband, sisters and brother at the Melton Cemetery. She was born at Half Acre, Cannon Co., the daughter of the late Fred and Hester Melton Hale.

Marie is survived by her daughters, Marcia (Gerald) Melton and Melanie (Frank) Nistad; grandchildren, Matthew (Laura) Daniel, Caleb (Heather) Daniel, Skylar (Shelby) Daniel, Tylee (Greg) Mayfield, Jacob (LeeAnna) Melton and Kayla (Cole) Collins; great grandchildren, John, Audrey, Lillie, Holt, Case, Sara, Scarlett and coming soon, Silas, Phobe, Sam and Annabelle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Garrett.

Marie never met a stranger and wanted to know who your family was because family is everything. She loved her church, the Short Mountain Methodist at Half Acre. To Marie, everything should be the color purple or be a butterfly and on Easter, one should always wear a hat. If you are a grandchild, you can do no wrong.

To her last day, she said “I have the best life, I had the best husband, I have the best daughters and sons in law. My grandchildren have all made something of their life. I have never had a bad day; I am never sick and never worry about anything.”

Funeral Services will be 11 am Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at Short Mountain Methodist church with Gerald Melton officiating. Burial will follow in Melton Cemetery. Visitation with her family will be from 4 pm until 8 pm Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

Joyce Malone Johnson

June 21, 2021

Mrs. Joyce Malone Johnson, age 89 of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021.

Mrs. Johnson was born February 15, 1932 in Smithville, TN, a daughter of the late Ernest Malone and Claudine Grooms Malone. She was also preceded in death by her Husband; Retired American Airlines Captain, Charles R. “Cotton” Johnson and a sister; Judy Malone Cox.

Mrs. Johnson pioneered the Stewardess Corp with American Airlines and later moved to Chicago as Chief Stewardess between 1952 and 1957. She served as Director of the housing authority in Shelbyville for 5 years. She also served the City of Shelbyville on the Beer Board. Mrs. Johnson earned her realtors license and worked for 25 years, becoming President of the Middle Tennessee Board of Realtors. She was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club where she served as President.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by Daughter; Lesa Charlynn Johnson of Murfreesboro, TN and several nieces and nephews.

The family will hold private services at a later date.

The family requests memorials in Mrs. Johnson’s memory be made to St. Jude.

Mitchell Rowland

June 20, 2021

Mitchell Rowland, 70, of Liberty, TN died on the morning of June 18th 2021. He was in his home with his wife, two daughters, and son-in-law near.

He was a devout Christian and a long time member of Salem Baptist Church. He grew up farming and later graduated from MTSU. After he married his wife, Debra, he became a mail carrier for the Liberty Post Office and worked there for 38 years. He was often recognized in town by his red truck, which he also delivered the mail in.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready with a joke. He enjoyed spending time on the family farm with his metal detector and loved sharing pictures he’d captured there with his wildlife camera. He regularly spent time in his shed devoted to his latest woodworking project. In his later years, he often helped his younger siblings in projects such as assisting his brother build a new barn, and he was always ready to offer help to his family whenever they needed it.
His pride and joy were his two daughters and his young granddaughter. He will be long remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Debra Rowland; his daughter Mary Montgomery and her husband Tyler of Murfreesboro; his daughter Ashley Rowland of Chattanooga; his granddaughter Emma Rowland of Chattanooga; his brother, Tim Rowland; sisters, Genrose Davis, Terry Bess Malone, and Westa Morrison; and aunt, Mackie Yatooma. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mary Tom Rowland.

Visitation will be held at Salem Baptist Church Monday, June 21, 2021 at 1pm, which will immediately be followed by a funeral service at 5pm. Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.




Paul Cantrell

June 18, 2021

Mr. Paul Cantrell age 83 of Smithville, TN passed away on Thursday, June 17, 2021 at his home.

Paul was born on April 28, 1938 in Smithville, TN to his parents, the late Jesse Cantrell & Lillie Farless Derting. Also preceding him in death was his brother, Glenn Cantrell. Paul was a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and a small engine mechanic. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served as the local Veterans Affairs officer for over 40 years. He was a Mason, a Shriner and he served on the DeKalb Telephone Cooperative Board of Directors for many years.

The family of Mr. Paul Cantrell has chosen direct cremation. No services are planned at this time.

Survivors include his 2 Daughters, Amy (Bruce) Curtis of Smithville, TN & Sabrina St. John of McMinnville, TN. 4 Grandchildren, Julia Curtis & Kealah Pelfrey of Smithville, TN and Jamie & Tyler Judge both of McMinnville, TN. 4 Great Grandchildren. 2 Brothers, Lewis (Peggy) Cantrell of Smithville, TN & Ralph (Debbie) Cantrell of Wyoming. Sister, Helen (Robert) Yeghiavan of Pulaski, TN. Sister-in-law, Donna Cantrell of California. Several Nieces, Nephews and a Special Friend, Lori Johnson also survive.

Bonnie Castina Chacon

Bonnie Castina Chacon age 69 of the Johnson’s Chapel Community of DeKalb County, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, June 16, 2021 at Tristar Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. She was born May 31, 1952 to her parents, the late Refus and Ressie “Bill” Luna. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Luna. Bonnie worked for 22 years at Kitchen Craft/Smithport Cabinetry in the front office. She was a member of New Life United Pentecostal Church. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Gelasie “Marco” Chacon of Johnson’s Chapel; 2 children, Erick Dodd and fiance, Taylor Youngblood and Angel Chacon both of Johnson’s Chapel; brother, Larry (Angie) Luna of Johnson’s Chapel; special friends, Kristy Kennen, Linda Herman and Bruce (Sherril) Cunningham. Graveside services and interment will be 10:AM Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Peeled Chestnut Cemetery with Bros. Dwayne Cornelius and Elmore Judd officiating. There will not be any visitation at the funeral home, family and friends will meet at Peeled Chestnut Cemetery for the graveside service at 10:AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses, in memory of Bonnie. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
