Jack Watkins

Jack Watkins age 86 of Smithville, passed away Tuesday night, May 7, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER of a sudden illness.  He was born September 22, 1932 to his parents, the late Doyle D. and Clyda Evelyn Lawrence Watkins.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, Johnny Barry and brother, Wesley Watkins.  Jack was a faithful member of the Smithville First Baptist Church, a U.S. Air Force and Navy Veteran and retired from Lifeway Christian Resources as an Account Receivables Manager.  Jack love walking and running.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his  wife of 38 years, Frankie Watkins of Smithville, daughter, Danita (Claude) Baham of Lilburn, GA; step-daughter, Melissa (Eddie) Branscomb of Clemons, NC; granddaughter, Julia Baham and grandson Joshua Baham; 8 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Wallace Watkins of Illinois, Lawrence Watkins and Richard Watkins both of Arkansas; sister, Millicent Willbrand of Illinois.  Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Chad Ramsey officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.  Visitation with the family will be on Saturday 12 Noon until the time of the service at 3 p.m.  DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Billy Roy Sutton

Billy Roy Sutton, age 73, of Smithville passed away on Monday, May 6, 2019 at Riverpark Hospital in McMinnville. He was a Methodist, veteran in the Army National Guard, a member of AmVets and the Moose Lodge 1725.  He was also employed by Bob’s Central Heat and Air. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, May 8 at 2 pm at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home with interment to follow at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. He was preceded in death by his parents: Arthur and Ruth Young Sutton; Sister: Betty Swan, Nephew: Brian Swan. Survivors include his wife: Linda Redmon Sutton of Smithville; 1 Sister: Sue McCoig of Smithville; 1 Brother: Danny (Teresa) Sutton of McMinnville; 4 Nieces: Michelle (Brandon) Patton of Rock Island, Kati (Zach) Minton of McMinnville, Angela (Kevin) Harvey of Lebanon, Ashley (Michael) Lich of Old Hickory; 2 Nephews Stevie and Tonya Swan and Kyle and Taylor Sutton of McMinnville; 1 Brother-in-law: Leonard Redmon of Lebanon; Several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins also survive. Visitation with the Sutton family will be on Tuesday from 2-8pm and Wednesday 10am-2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the funeral home to help with expenses in memory of Billy. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.




Emma Ruth Scurlock

88 year old Emma Ruth Scurlock of Smithville passed away Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Eastern Star and the Banks Cumberland Presbyterian Church. An eastern star service will be on Wednesday at 3:00pm The funeral will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bernard Houk will officiate and burial will be in the Banks Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the service at 4 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Nettie Certain Vanatta; husband, Austin Scurlock; child, Larry Scurlock; brothers, Homer, Omar, and Tom Vanatta; grandchildren, Jonathan Scurlock, Jacob, and Daniel Caldwell. Survivors include three daughters, Janice Johnson and Pam Miller both of Smithville and Donna and Terry Caldwell of Rock Island. Two sons, Jeff and Debbie Scurlock and Danny and Teresa Scurlock of Smithville. Twelve grandchildren, Sondra and Donald Stanley of Smithville, Eric Johnson of Smithville, Bradley and Lynn Miller of Watertown, Brandon and Becky Miller of Smithville, Doug and Crystal Scurlock of Kentucky, Lori Young of Kentucky, Crystal Scurlock and Dana Holland of McMinnville. Seven great grandchildren. Daughter-in-law, Peggy Scurlock of Kentucky and special friend Nancy Hale of Ohio. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made to the Banks Cemetery.




Charles Dennis Barry

May 3, 2019

Charles Dennis Barry age 71 of Smithville, passed away Thursday morning, May 2, 2019 at his residence. He was born May 1, 1948 to his parents, the late Edwin and Lois Bennett Barry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his cousins, Kenneth Corley and Carolyn Corley. He worked in engineering and owned the Computer Outlet in Lebanon for over 10 years. Charles was a member of Mid TN Region AACA, where he served on the board and was one of the main judges. His love in cars was his corvettes. He is survived by his wife, Mary Barry of Smithville; step-daughter, Melissa (Douglas) Smith of Nolensville; 2 cousins, Cathy Marler and JoAnn Newbell both of Alexandria and special friend, James Burton. Graveside services will be Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 3:30 at DeKalb Memorial Gardens with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Visitation will be Saturday 3 PM until 8 PM and Sunday 1 PM until 3:15 at which time Mr. Barry will be taken to the Cemetery for the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the DeKalb Animal Coalition, in memory of Mr. Barry. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Doylene Caplinger-Finchum

Doylene Caplinger-Finchum age 57 of Smithville, passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 at her residence.  She was born December 19, 1961 to her parents, the late Doyle and Dorothy Carter Caplinger.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Brian Doyle Pack; husband, Brian Finchum; grandparents, Charlie Floyd and Vera Carter, Delton and Eunice Caplinger.  She was a member of Snow Hill Baptist Church and a store clerk.  Survivors include her brother, Charles (Rhonda) Caplinger of Smithville; niece, Jennifer Caplinger and nephew, Michael Caplinger both of Smithville; Aunt, Frankie (Jack) Watkins of Smithville; mother-in-law, Joy Conn of Indiana; special friend, Barbara (Charles) Fish of Smithville; several cousins and friends.  Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Thursday, May 2, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Royce Martin officiating and interment will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens.  Visitation with the family will be on Thursday 11:AM until the time of the service at 4 p.m.   DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.



Mark Carter

April 30, 2019

Mark Carter age 64 of Smithville, passed away Friday night, April 26, 2019 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital ER. He was born February 8, 1955 to his parents, the late Robert Dean and Mary Alice Burdsall Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Derry Carter and Mike Carter. Mark and his wife, Patty are the owners of Mark’s Center Hill Pub and Patty’s Restaurant. He was also a construction worker, former member of AmVets and CM ABATE and was a Baptist. He is survived by his wife, Patty Carter of Smithville; children, Mary Carter of Smithville, Lisa Sanchez of Murfreesboro, Todd Carter of Indiana, Holly Carter of Indiana, Jason Carter of Indiana, and Steve Carter of Indiana, 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Tim Carter of Indiana. The family has honored Mark’s request to be cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
