Billy Walker

Mr. Billy Walker, age 68, of Watertown, TN, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018.Billy was born October 24, 1949 in Lebanon, TN, son of the late William Gordon Walker and Grace Pearl Givan Walker. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1967 and later graduated from Hartsville Vocational School. Billy married LaVonne Washer on August 31, 1973. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Alexandria where he served as Deacon. Mr. Walker was a farmer.
Mr. Walker is survived by his Wife of 44 years; LaVonne Walker of Watertown, TN. Three Daughters; Julie (Kent) Beasley of Watertown, TN, Jill (Tim) Chappell of Watertown, TN, and Cindy (Kelsey) Evert of Watertown, TN. Sister; Helen Walker Edwards of Alexandria, TN. Grandchildren; Brady Chappell, Lola Klaire Chappell, Jack Walker Beasley, Ben Thomas Beasley, James William Evert, and Camille Evert. Mother-in-Law; Jo Doris Washer. Nephews; Steve Edwards and Tim Edwards and Niece; Angie Garrett.
Funeral Services for Mr. Walker are scheduled to be conducted from First Baptist Church, Alexandria on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 1PM with Bro. Billie Friel officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillview Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation with the Walker family will be held at Avant Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2PM until 8PM and at First Baptist Church, Alexandria on Thursday from 11AM until the time of the service at 1PM.
In lieu of flowers, the Walker family requests memorials in Mr. Billy’s memory be made to the Gideons.




Helen Joyce Bain

Helen Joyce Bain age 71 of Smithville, was born May 5, 1946 and went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, January 28, 2018. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Martha Martin Caldwell; husband, David “Cobb” Bain; 2 sisters, Debbie Carmack and Linda Walker; 2 brothers, L.C. Murphy and Austin Caldwell. She was a Christian and member of the Faith Congregational Methodist Church and the manager of Bridgeway Motel since 2003. Helen was a loving Mama, Nana and Friend. She loved people and had a contagious smile that would warm every heart. There are so many words you could use to describe the wonderful person that she was. She leaves to cherish so many memories her 3 girls and sons-in-law, Teresa and Wayne Steele of McMinnville; Melissa and Tim Mullins of Smithville and Holly and Jamie Anderson of Smithville; her 6 grandchildren, who where her world, Brandon Tallent, Miah Mullins, J.J. Mullins, Landon Mullins, Hannah Anderson and Emily Anderson and many friends. Funeral services celebrating her life will be conducted 3:00 PM, Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Wallace Caldwell and Mark Miller officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 1 PM until 8 PM and Wednesday 10 AM until the time of the service at 3 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Reda Juanita Patrick

January 30, 2018

Reda Juanita Patrick age 72 of Smithville passed away Saturday night, January 27, 2018 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. She was born June 14, 1945 to her parents, the late Riley Monroe and Pearlie Lou Randolph Bumbalough. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Patrick and 2 sisters. She was a retired restaurant worker and a garment and shoe factory worker and a member of the Non-Denominational Church. She is survived by 1 daughter, Janice K. Patrick of Indianapolis, IN; 2 sisters, Dorothy Patrick of Smithville and Bessie M. Matthews of Byrdstown; 1 brother-in-law, Horace “Doc” Matthews of Byrdstown; several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services and interment will be 2 PM Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Morrison. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Rose Ann Hale Greene

January 28, 2018

Rose Ann Hale Greene age 63 of Snyder, Texas and a native of DeKalb County, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2018 in Texas. Ann was born January 9, 1955 to her parents, the late James and Evelyn Atnip Hale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Shane Taylor; and 2 brothers, Charles and Boyd Hale. Survivors include her husband, Chuck Greene of Texas; daughter, Jackie Loyd of Texas; sons, Marcus(Stephanie) Parham and Peyton Greene both of Texas; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; 1 sister, Donna (Richard) Summers of Dowelltown; 2 brothers, Billy (Goldie) Hale of Smithville and Carlon (Jean) Hale of Alexandria; mother-in-law, Geraldine Greene of Texas; sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Gary) Jones and Shelia McCormack both of Texas; several nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial services celebrating the life of Ann will be conducted 12 Noon on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Billy Hale and Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 2 PM until 8 PM and Wednesday 10 AM until the time of the service at 12 Noon. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Edith L.V. Young

January 25, 2018

95 year old Edith L.V. Young of Smithville passed away Thursday at NHC in Smithville. She was a member of the Mt. View Baptist Church and a homemaker. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Jefferson Cemetery. Dennis Wood will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 3 p.m. at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amerce Young; parents, Ollie Monroe Barnes and Sarah Della Barnes Redmon; step-father, Thomas Redmon; two sisters, Irene Barnes and Martha Ann Foster; brother, Alvie Barnes; and three infants, Wilma Dean, Arlie Edward and James Allan. Survivors include three children, Talmadge and Bobbie Young of Smithville, Judie and John Green of Walling, and Anthony and Patricia Young of Smithville. Granddaughter, Jayrah and Wade Humphrey of Walling. Great grandchildren, McKennah and Bo Humphrey. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Jerry Lendon Winfrey

January 25, 2018

Jerry Lendon Winfrey, age 75, passed away at his home in Smithville, TN on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 of an apparent heart attack. A native of DeKalb County, he was born February 10, 1942 to the late Lucas and Ruth Moss Winfrey. Mr. Winfrey obtained an associate in arts degree from Cumberland University in 1962 and studied at Austin Peay State College where he received a BS degree in 1964 and a Master of Arts in Education in 1965. In addition, Jerry had one year of advanced studies beyond the Master degree, some of which included several visits to South America with special emphasis on Ecuador and Peru. Jerry’s professional career focused on teaching at the elementary level, all of which was in the DeKalb County School System except for one semester in the Hampton City School System, in Hampton, VA in 1966. After teaching many fourth-grade students over his 32 years of service, Mr. Winfrey retired May 22, 1999. Jerry loved teaching, but he also enjoyed several other activities including collecting antiques and glassware, conducting research on family history with special emphasis on the Winfrey and Moss families, researching and documentingthe history of the First United Methodist Church in Smithville, and discussing or debating political issues. He was a member of the Smithville First United Methodist Church but also attended the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cookeville with his friend and former vicar, Rev. Mark Pafford. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents (Sidney Brooks and Era Driver Winfrey and Charlie Lee and Ada Foster Moss), Aunts and Uncles. He is survived by several cousins and many special friends. Jerry’s wishes were to be cremated and that a graveside memorial service be held at the Winfrey family section of the Whorton Springs Cemetery with Bro. Mark Pafford officiating. The graveside service for Winfrey will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, February 18. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Justin Potter Library (particularly the Genealogy Room) or the Smithville First Methodist Church Building Fund in memory of Mr. Winfrey.
