69 year old Linda Darlene Phillips of Dowelltown passed away at her home in Dowelltown. She was a Baptist and an Administrative Assistant. The family has chosen a direct cremation. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Ruth Jackson Stafford and a brother, Clifford Stafford. Survivors include two daughters, Jill and Frank Lane of Smithville and Janell and Ruben Millan of South Carolina. A son, Eric and Renee Silcox of Florida. Seven grandchildren, David and Kuntea Silcox of South Carolina, Devan Nicholcon of North Carolina, Arielle and Jordan Silcox of Florida, Colby, Tiara, and Laila Clark all of Smithville. Five great grandchildren. A sister, Dolores Sapp and a brother Bill and Gail Stafford of Florida. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

56 year old Michael Anthony Murphy of Liberty died Monday on Old Mill Hill Road in Smithville. He was a Baptist and a self-employed painter. The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Howard Carroll will officiate and burial will be in the Gunter-Grizzle Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Edward Murphy. Survivors include a daughter, Felicia Murphy of Ohio. A son, Matthew Murphy of Nashville. Granddaughter, Brenna Orbgast of Ohio. Mother, Jackie Christine Murphy of Liberty. Brothers, Larry Murphy, Lee R. Murphy, and Jeff Murphy all of Ohio. Aunts and uncles, Sue and Vernon Lee Bogle of Woodbury, Toy and Faye Lawson of Liberty, and Eula and Robert Presley of McMinnville. Several nieces and nephews and two great great nephews also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Jeffery Brown Ferrell age 55 of Smithville passed away Tuesday morning, July 17, 2018 at his mother’s home. He was born October 15, 1962 to his parents, Opal Atnip and the late Jewel Brown Ferrell. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son Ashley Ferrell, 7 brothers, Tony and Rickey DeVault, Terry “Vern” Ferrell, Gary, Charles, Larry, and Dennis Ferrell. He worked in farming. Survivors include his mother, Opal Atnip of Smithville; grandson, Ashton Ferrell of Smithville; 2 brothers, Scott Ferrell and Chris Ferrell both of Smithville; 3 aunts, Christine Johnson and Emma Burnette both of Mt. Juliet and Faye Wells of Dayton; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 1:PM Friday, July 20, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 2:PM until 8:PM and Friday 9:AM until the time of the service at 1:PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Jobyna Lockhart Ferrell age 76 of Smithville passed away Sunday night, July 15, 2018 at her residence. She was born January 20, 1942 to her parents, the late Albert and Eula Swanger Lockhart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jewell Brown Ferrell; son, Larry Gregory Strange; sister, Dottie Hixson. She was a Baptist and a homemaker. She is survived by 1 son, Jeffery Todd Strange of Smithville and 1 sister, Wilbalene Crocker of South Pittsburgh, TN. Graveside services and interment will be Wednesday July 18, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Whorton Springs Cemetery with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. There will not be any services or visitation at the funeral home. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the service. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

79 year old Maideen Merriman of Sparta passed away Tuesday at her residence. She was a Baptist and a homemaker. The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Frank Bratcher will officiate and burial will be in the Banks Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Lula Mae Dutton; husband, Oliver Merriman; sons, Bobby and Allen Merriman and a brother, Clyde Dutton. Survivors include seven children, Carol Jan Young of Sparta, Earl and Vickey Merriman of Sparta, Anita Dunn of Sparta, Lisa Armstrong of McMinnville, Margret Stembridge of McMinnville, Ricky Merriman of Sparta, and Jeff Merriman of McMinnville. A brother, Jerry Dutton of Watertown. A sister Penny Brooks of Gallatin. Grandchildren, Debbie Ring, Jason Young, Stacey Young Collins, Brad Young, George Merriman, Reba Merriman, Brian Stembridge, Michale Stembridge, Krystal Merriman, Jessie Merriman, Tammy Merriman, Dawn Meeks, Eddie Vaughn JR, Cody Vaughn, Tina Roberts, Jamie Merriman, Angie Campbell, Johnny Merriman, Scottie Merriman, Donnie Merriman, and Cassie Merriman. Twenty one great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, and several cousins, and a niece and nephew also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family expresses their deep appreciation to their mother’s caregiver, Deborah Barriger, Dr. Chad Griffin, and the staff of Avalon Hospice for the wonderful care given to their mother.
Don Carlos Ashburn, Jr.

87-year-old Don Carlos Ashburn, Jr. of Smithville passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at his residence. He was a farmer and a member of the Smithville Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in Korea. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Brother Dan Gulley will officiate and burial will be in the Ponder-Burton Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday from 12:00 noon until the service at 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Ashburn was preceded in death by his parents Ollie Carr and Don Carlos Ashburn, Sr. and granddaughter, Leslie Ashburn Houchin. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Reba Parsley Ashburn of Smithville; two sons, Ronald and Tammy Ashburn of Smithville, and Lyndon and Deborah Ashburn of Dowelltown; granddaughter, Stacy and Mark Winfree of Smithville; two great grandchildren, Rilee and Laina Winfree of Smithville; and one sister, Peggy Richardson of Tullahoma.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Smithville Church of Christ Day School. They have also requested no food please.
