Edith L.V. Young

January 25, 2018

95 year old Edith L.V. Young of Smithville passed away Thursday at NHC in Smithville. She was a member of the Mt. View Baptist Church and a homemaker. A graveside service will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Jefferson Cemetery. Dennis Wood will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 3 p.m. at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amerce Young; parents, Ollie Monroe Barnes and Sarah Della Barnes Redmon; step-father, Thomas Redmon; two sisters, Irene Barnes and Martha Ann Foster; brother, Alvie Barnes; and three infants, Wilma Dean, Arlie Edward and James Allan. Survivors include three children, Talmadge and Bobbie Young of Smithville, Judie and John Green of Walling, and Anthony and Patricia Young of Smithville. Granddaughter, Jayrah and Wade Humphrey of Walling. Great grandchildren, McKennah and Bo Humphrey. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. In addition to flowers, donations can be made to Jefferson Cemetery.




Jerry Lendon Winfrey

Jerry Lendon Winfrey, age 75, passed away at his home in Smithville, TN on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 of an apparent heart attack. A native of DeKalb County, he was born February 10, 1942 to the late Lucas and Ruth Moss Winfrey. Mr. Winfrey obtained an associate in arts degree from Cumberland University in 1962 and studied at Austin Peay State College where he received a BS degree in 1964 and a Master of Arts in Education in 1965. In addition, Jerry had one year of advanced studies beyond the Master degree, some of which included several visits to South America with special emphasis on Ecuador and Peru. Jerry’s professional career focused on teaching at the elementary level, all of which was in the DeKalb County School System except for one semester in the Hampton City School System, in Hampton, VA in 1966. After teaching many fourth-grade students over his 32 years of service, Mr. Winfrey retired May 22, 1999. Jerry loved teaching, but he also enjoyed several other activities including collecting antiques and glassware, conducting research on family history with special emphasis on the Winfrey and Moss families, researching and documentingthe history of the First United Methodist Church in Smithville, and discussing or debating political issues. He was a member of the Smithville First United Methodist Church but also attended the Unitarian Universalist Church in Cookeville with his friend and former vicar, Rev. Mark Pafford. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents (Sidney Brooks and Era Driver Winfrey and Charlie Lee and Ada Foster Moss), Aunts and Uncles. He is survived by several cousins and many special friends. Jerry’s wishes were to be cremated and that a graveside memorial service be held at the Winfrey family section of the Whorton Springs Cemetery with Bro. Mark Pafford officiating. The graveside service for Winfrey will be held at 1:30 PM Sunday, February 18. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Justin Potter Library (particularly the Genealogy Room) or the Smithville First Methodist Church Building Fund in memory of Mr. Winfrey. Margaret Catherine Rowlan

January 22, 2018

86 year old Margaret Catherine Rowlan died Wednesday, January 17 at NHC Healthcare in Smithville. In addition to her parents Carl and Vivian Carins Dorsett, Rowlan was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Hoover Rowlan; a son, Paul Eugene Edwards; and eleven brothers and sisters.She is survived by two sons, Richard Edwards of Smithville and Jeffery Edwards of Mt. Juliet; one daughter, Carleena Mueller of Smithville; a brother, Donald Dorsett of Texas; three sisters, Christine Gelo of Texas, Charlotte Barnhart of Florida and Phyllis Finecy of Indiana; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family has chosen cremation but a memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Smithville Church of God. Forest Lawns Funeral Home in Goodlettsville was in charge of the cremation.




Reba Frances Nixon

January 21, 2018

Reba Frances Nixon age 93 of Watertown, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 at Tennova Healthcare in Lebanon. Born in Dekalb County, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Nola Edna Taylor. Reba was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Virgil Nixon in 2016 and by her sisters, Ina Mae Trapp, Clara Fuson and Callie Hatten Taylor; brothers, Lloyd, Hobert, H.D. and H.C. “Tye” Taylor. She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Nixon of Watertown and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown with Bro. Ronnie Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. till service time on Tuesday. Interment will be at Mt. Holly Cemetery in Smithville. HUNTER FUNERAL HOME




Sabra Jane Patrick Redmon

January 20, 2018

Sabra Jane Patrick Redmon age 53 of Smithville, passed away Friday morning, January 19 2018 at her residence of an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Redmon and a special nephew, Stephen Patrick. Sabra was a homemaker and member of New Life United Pentecostal Church. She is survived by 1 daughter, Amy (Steven) Ferrell of Smithville; 4 grandchildren, Shaun and Linda West and Ellabeth and Colton Ferrell; parents, William “Bill” and Dorothy Patrick of Smithville; 2 brothers, John Rice and Jerome (Rhonda) Patrick both of Liberty; and 5 sisters, Sandra Jones of McMinnville, Angela Jarvis of Smithville, Teresa Poss of McMinnville, Loretta Elkins of McMinnville and Christina Jones of McMinnville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 3 PM Sunday, January 21, 2018 at New Life United Pentecostal Church with Bros. Dwayne Cornelius, Keith Huling and Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Taylor Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday 1 PM until 5 PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel and Sunday 1 PM until the time of the service at 3 PM at New Life United Pentecostal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Marcus Boyd

January 19, 2018

Marcus Boyd age 85 of Smithville, passed away Thursday January 18, 2018 at his residence in Smithville. He was born April 4, 1932 in Vansant, VA, to his parents, the late Marion Rendew and Laura Myrtle Hale Boyd. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Angie Johnson Boyd; first wife, Loretta Breeding Boyd; infant daughter, Harriett Elizabeth Boyd; brothers, Ardue, Milton, Walter, Rendew, Jr., and Irson Boyd; sisters, Mary Cook, Myrtle and Vernie Baldwin, Trula Greenwood and Nell Stiltner. Marcus was a Charter Member and Trustee of Big Fox Community Church and attended The Baptist Tabernacle, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was retired from Federal Mogul. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Boyd of Smithville; son, Tim (Dianne) Boyd of Michigan; daughter, Belinda Randolph of Smithville; brother, James Thurman Boyd of Vansant, VA; step-children, Melisa (Greg) Muskopf and Nikki Johnson and the late John Johnson of Smithville; grandchildren, Abby Vogel, Lisa Arnold, Andy Boyd, Heidi Boyd, Kellen Curtis, Garrett Muskopf, Madelyn Johnson and Adam Johnson. Funeral services in Smithville will be 7:PM Friday, January 19, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bros. Garry McBride and Tim Pack officiating. Visitation will be Friday 10 AM until the time of the service at 7 PM. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the Big Fox Community Church with Bros. Lester Boyd and Edward Tiller officiating and burial will follow in the FMF Boyd Cemetery in Vansant, VA. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations please be made to the Harmony Center in Knoxville for Foster Children, those donations can be made at the funeral home.
