Martha Jean Griffin Hendrix Hall

Martha Jean Griffin Hendrix Hall age 75 of Smithville, passed away Tuesday night, June 19, 2018 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. She was born June 11, 1943 to her parents, the late Rollins and Mary Elizabeth Madry Griffin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Cassie Hendrix and 1 sister, Pat Wade. She was a self-employed dog groomer. She leaves to cherish her memory, 3 children, Gina (Jack) Wheeler of Murfreesboro, Phillip (Jing) Hendrix, Jr. of Birmingham, AL, and Inga (Darrell) Johnson of Liberty; 13 grandchildren, Keshia (Thomas) Hale, Gabriel (Kyle) Robinson, Noah Byford, Justin Johnson, Eli Johnson, Carlie Sullivan, Zack Sullivan, Annie, Abbie, Allie and Jack Wheeler, Zhi Hendrix and Dylan (Kimberly) Sullivan; 6 great-grandchildren, Layne, Leighton, and Landry Hale, Daniel Brandt, Kylee Robinson, Aria Sullivan; 2 brothers, James Gary (Debbie) Griffin of Huntsville, AL and Johnny Falcon (Julie) Griffin of Decatur, AL; several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services and interment will be held 1 PM Monday, June 25, 2018 at the Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur, AL with Bro. Thomas Hale officiating. There will be a Celebration of life service held at 2 PM Sunday, June 24 at the Liberty United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation at the funeral home or prior to the service at the church. Both services are open to all family and friends. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements
Ralph Lee Curtis

Mr. Ralph Lee Curtis, age 88 of Alexandria, TN passed away Tuesday morning, June 19, 2018.
Mr. Curtis was born on May 16, 1930 son of the late Jim & Sarah Ann Neal Curtis. He married Lawana Faye Fowler Curtis in June of 1955 and she preceded him in death on December 5, 2014. Also preceding in death are Daughter; Teresa Mai Hunter, brothers; Monroe Curtis, Johnny Hall Curtis, and Jimmy “Cowboy” Curtis and Sisters; Mary Cason, Mattie Malone, Gladys Driver and Gracie Henley. Mr. Curtis was a member of the Lower Helton The Baptist Church and was retired from the T.V.A. as a Track Forman. Mr. Curtis served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Curtis is survived by two sons; Jeff (Glenda) Curtis of Alexandria, TN, and Steven (Michille) Curtis of Alexandria, TN. Five grandchildren; Will Tarpley of AL, Derek (Brittany) Tarpley of Elmwood, TN, Dakota Curtis, Colton Curtis and Savannah Curtis all of Alexandria, TN. One Great-Grandchild; Makayaligh Tarpley. Brother; Roy Dale “Pig” (Linda) Curtis of Watertown, TN. Sister; Amy Johnson of Smithville, TN.
Funeral Services for Mr. Ralph Curtis are scheduled to be conducted from the Chapel of Avant Funeral Home on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 2PM with Bro. Mike Clayborn and Bro. Dennis Wood officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Hillview Memorial Cemetery.
Vsitation with the Curtis family will be held at Avant Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4PM until 8PM, on Thursday from 2PM until 8PM, and on Friday after 10AM until service time at 2PM.
Judy Silcox

74 year old Judy Silcox of Smithville passed away Tuesday at St. Thomas Midtown Nashville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bright Hill Methodist Church. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Wallace Caldwell and Alex Woodward will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-8 p.m.; Thursday from 1-8 p.m.; and Friday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie R. and Potter Taylor Cripps; three brothers, James Curly Cripps, Jerry Worm Cripps, and Gene Cripps; sister, Jeanette Dodson; and three sisters-in-law, Chola Cripps, Brenda Cripps, and Shirley Cripps. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, M.B. Silcox of Smithville. Children, Tracy “Burt” and Jennifer Silcox of Sparta, Stacy “Moto” Silcox of Smithville and Ashby and Alex Woodward of Smithville. Three grandchildren, Thomas Dalton and Cheyenne Silcox of Smithville, Harlli Whyte Silcox and Lance Ball of Smithville and Ainsley Layne Woodward of Smithville. Great granddaughter, Addison Kate Silcox of Smithville. Brother, Johnnie Roscoe Cripps, Jr. of Smithville. Sister, Brenda Paulette Cripps of Smithville. Lula Bell (Lue) Brown

Lula Bell (Lue) Brown age 83 of Smithville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, June 13, 2018 at St. Thomas West Hospital. She was born May 24, 1935 to her parents, the late Bailey W. and Martha P. Luna Judkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frenchie Elliott Brown; 1 grandson, Ronald Brown, II; 1 great-grandson, Nick Byrge; 1 sister, Violet Ray; 3 brothers, James Lee Judkins, William Henry Judkins and Clifford Bailey Judkins. Ms. Lue was a member of the New Union The Baptist Church, retired sales associate, member of the Smithville B&PW Club and was very involved with the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Children’s Miracle Network. Funeral services for Ms. Lue Brown will be 11:AM Saturday, June 16, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Keith Sims officiating and burial will follow in Jefferson Cemetery. Norma Gunter age 90 of Smithville, passed away Friday morning June 8, 2018 at the Webb House in Smithville. She was born August 22, 1927 to her parents, the late Clarence and Edna Cook Phillips. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gunter; son, Phillip Gunter; 2 brothers, Clarence Phillips, Jr and Bill Phillips. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church and a retired clothing salesperson. She leaves to cherish her memory, 2 children, Dan Gunter of Lakeland, FL and Sharon (Harold) Rader of Smithville; 5 grandchildren, Danielle Gunter and husband, Stig Thomsen, Monica and husband, Chris Dickens, Leah and husband, Eric Orsbon, Matt and wife, Thi Gunter and Alex Rader; 4 great-grandchildren, Brice and Drew Dickens, Auden and Ben Thomsen; 3 sisters, Jane Eller and Mary Cantrell Lawson both of Smithville and Faye Walker Campbell and husband, Don of McMinnville; sister-in-law, Fredia Phillips of Smithville; special friend, Lynda Gunter and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:PM Sunday, June 10, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. VL Baker officiating and burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. Kenneth Carter

A memorial service for Mr. Kenneth Carter, age 87 of Algood, will be held Saturday, June 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Algood United Methodist Church. Rev. Albert Willis will officiate. His cremated remains will be returned to the Carter Family Farm in DeKalb County at a later date.
Mr. Carter’s family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
Mr. Carter died Sunday morning, June 3, 2018 at Signature Healthcare of Putnam Co. in Algood.
He was born August 8, 1930 in the Temperance Hall community of Dekalb Co., TN to the late Charles Carter and Ocia Mason Carter. He attended Temperance Hall School and was a 1950 graduate of Gordonsville High School.
Kenneth is fondly remembered for his tireless work ethic, from early days on his family’s Grade A Dairy Farm, to his 17 years with Middle TN Natural Gas from which he retired in 1995. He was especially skilled at building fences on the farm and enjoyed bird hunting and working with horses. An avid gardener, he shared the majority of his crops with friends and neighbors. He loved to help people and joking with people.
He was a longtime member of Temperance Hall Methodist Church and has been a member of Algood United Methodist Church since moving to Algood in 2009. He continued to bring joy to people as he built many birdhouses for friends and neighbors and warmly greeted passer-bys from his front porch seat with a wave.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine McDonald and brother, John Mason Carter.
He is survived by his adoring family, his wife of 64 years, Nadene Rice Carter; son, Richard (Lucinda) Carter of DeKalb Co.; daughters, Karen (Terry) Foutch of Algood and Lisa Carter of Cookeville; grandchildren, Derek (Kelley) Carter, Kari Carter, Hillary Foutch, Olivia Foutch, Parker Foutch and Ella Jane Foutch; great grandchilren, Brayden Carter, Jace Carter, Kye Carter and Keeleigh Carter; and nephews, Byron (Pam) McDonald of Mt. Juliet and Mason Lee (Pam) Carter of Liberty, TN.
