David Summers

David Summers age 68 of Smithville, passed away Monday evening, June 25, 2018 at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Elbridge and Annie Odell Pedigo Summers; granddaughter, Olivia Taylor; mother-in-law, Shirley Southard. He attended the Experience in Murfreesboro, was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and was animal control with the City of Smithville. David coached Little League and Senior League Baseball and Jr. Pro Basketball. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Monica Summers of Smithville; 3 children, Cindy (Ken) Taylor of Smithville, Travis (Ashley) Summers of Murfreesboro and Freddy Summers of Smithville; 4 grandchildren, Shauna, Abbi, and Kenlee Taylor and Devin Summers; 2 sisters, Barbara Summers of Gordonsville and Sue Petty of Smithville; 1 brother, Eddie (Jean) Summers of Watertown and several nephews and cousins. The family has honored David’s request to be cremated and there will be a Memorial Service 2 PM Thursday, June 28, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Trent Colwell officiating. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to DeKalb Funeral Chapel to help with funeral expenses. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.




Ewin L. Herman

June 26, 2018

83 year old Ewin L. Herman of Liberty passed away Sunday at Northside Healthcare in Murfreesboro. He was a Baptist, a Korean War veteran of the US Navy, and a retired truck driver. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Liberty. Leonard Herman will officiate and burial will be in the Mount Moriah Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home and Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jep and Willie Taylor Herman; a daughter, Judy Carol Walker Womack; and two sisters, Bertie Lee Bogle and Dean Murphy; and two infant brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Vicky Murdock of Murfreesboro. A son, Jerry and Murinna Herman of Liberty. Five grandchildren, Aaron and Keri Walker of Tullahoma, Leslie and Zane McKee of Lascassas, Olivia and Matt Melton of Watertown, Chris Tate of Murfreesboro, and Jessica and Patrick Baine of Lavergne and five great grandchildren also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Donations may be made to the Lighthouse Christian Camp.




Rev. Irving Daniel Parker, Sr.

June 25, 2018

Rev. Irving Daniel Parker, Sr. , age 83 of Sparta, passed away on Saturday evening at his residence.

Rev. Parker was born April 24, 1935 in Oyster, Virginia. He was the last surviving child of twelve born to the late George William and Aline Marshall Parker. He was a longtime minister, serving for 63 years. He ministered in Sparta, Smithville, Virginia and Kentucky. Rev. Parker held revivals in 48 states with the two exceptions being Hawaii and Alaska. He served his nation in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents and siblings, he is also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Peggy Bennett Parker; daughter Laura Ann Parker.

Surviving family members include his children:Rev. Danny Parker and wife Opal of Smithville, Bruce Parker and wife Bonnie of Sparta, Faith Lynn Parker and husband Jamil Charki of Richmond, VA and Mark Andrew Parker and wife Jamie of Sparta

Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00pm Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from the DeRossett Brethren in Christ Church. Burial will follow in Copeland’s Chapel Cemetery with military honors presented by the Veterans’ Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5-8:00pm at Hunter Funeral Home. Rev. Parker will lie in state from noon until service time Wednesday at the church. Richard Lehman will officiate.

Grandsons and Charlie Davis will serve as pallbearers.

Martha Jean Griffin Hendrix Hall

Martha Jean Griffin Hendrix Hall age 75 of Smithville, passed away Tuesday night, June 19, 2018 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. She was born June 11, 1943 to her parents, the late Rollins and Mary Elizabeth Madry Griffin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Cassie Hendrix and 1 sister, Pat Wade. She was a self-employed dog groomer. She leaves to cherish her memory, 3 children, Gina (Jack) Wheeler of Murfreesboro, Phillip (Jing) Hendrix, Jr. of Birmingham, AL, and Inga (Darrell) Johnson of Liberty; 13 grandchildren, Keshia (Thomas) Hale, Gabriel (Kyle) Robinson, Noah Byford, Justin Johnson, Eli Johnson, Carlie Sullivan, Zack Sullivan, Annie, Abbie, Allie and Jack Wheeler, Zhi Hendrix and Dylan (Kimberly) Sullivan; 6 great-grandchildren, Layne, Leighton, and Landry Hale, Daniel Brandt, Kylee Robinson, Aria Sullivan; 2 brothers, James Gary (Debbie) Griffin of Huntsville, AL and Johnny Falcon (Julie) Griffin of Decatur, AL; several nieces and nephews also survive. Graveside services and interment will be held 1 PM Monday, June 25, 2018 at the Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur, AL with Bro. Thomas Hale officiating. There will be a Celebration of life service held at 2 PM Sunday, June 24 at the Liberty United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation at the funeral home or prior to the service at the church. Both services are open to all family and friends. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements




Ralph Lee Curtis

June 20, 2018

Mr. Ralph Lee Curtis, age 88 of Alexandria, TN passed away Tuesday morning, June 19, 2018.

Mr. Curtis was born on May 16, 1930 son of the late Jim & Sarah Ann Neal Curtis. He married Lawana Faye Fowler Curtis in June of 1955 and she preceded him in death on December 5, 2014. Also preceding in death are Daughter; Teresa Mai Hunter, brothers; Monroe Curtis, Johnny Hall Curtis, and Jimmy “Cowboy” Curtis and Sisters; Mary Cason, Mattie Malone, Gladys Driver and Gracie Henley. Mr. Curtis was a member of the Lower Helton The Baptist Church and was retired from the T.V.A. as a Track Forman. Mr. Curtis served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Curtis is survived by two sons; Jeff (Glenda) Curtis of Alexandria, TN, and Steven (Michille) Curtis of Alexandria, TN. Five grandchildren; Will Tarpley of AL, Derek (Brittany) Tarpley of Elmwood, TN, Dakota Curtis, Colton Curtis and Savannah Curtis all of Alexandria, TN. One Great-Grandchild; Makayaligh Tarpley. Brother; Roy Dale “Pig” (Linda) Curtis of Watertown, TN. Sister; Amy Johnson of Smithville, TN.

Funeral Services for Mr. Ralph Curtis are scheduled to be conducted from the Chapel of Avant Funeral Home on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 2PM with Bro. Mike Clayborn and Bro. Dennis Wood officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Hillview Memorial Cemetery.

Vsitation with the Curtis family will be held at Avant Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4PM until 8PM, on Thursday from 2PM until 8PM, and on Friday after 10AM until service time at 2PM.




Judy Silcox

June 19, 2018

74 year old Judy Silcox of Smithville passed away Tuesday at St. Thomas Midtown Nashville. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bright Hill Methodist Church. The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Wallace Caldwell and Alex Woodward will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-8 p.m.; Thursday from 1-8 p.m.; and Friday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie R. and Potter Taylor Cripps; three brothers, James Curly Cripps, Jerry Worm Cripps, and Gene Cripps; sister, Jeanette Dodson; and three sisters-in-law, Chola Cripps, Brenda Cripps, and Shirley Cripps. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, M.B. Silcox of Smithville. Children, Tracy “Burt” and Jennifer Silcox of Sparta, Stacy “Moto” Silcox of Smithville and Ashby and Alex Woodward of Smithville. Three grandchildren, Thomas Dalton and Cheyenne Silcox of Smithville, Harlli Whyte Silcox and Lance Ball of Smithville and Ainsley Layne Woodward of Smithville. Great granddaughter, Addison Kate Silcox of Smithville. Brother, Johnnie Roscoe Cripps, Jr. of Smithville. Sister, Brenda Paulette Cripps of Smithville.
