87-year-old Don Carlos Ashburn, Jr. of Smithville passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at his residence. He was a farmer and a member of the Smithville Church of Christ. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in Korea. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Brother Dan Gulley will officiate and burial will be in the Ponder-Burton Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday from 12:00 noon until the service at 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Ashburn was preceded in death by his parents Ollie Carr and Don Carlos Ashburn, Sr. and granddaughter, Leslie Ashburn Houchin. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Reba Parsley Ashburn of Smithville; two sons, Ronald and Tammy Ashburn of Smithville, and Lyndon and Deborah Ashburn of Dowelltown; granddaughter, Stacy and Mark Winfree of Smithville; two great grandchildren, Rilee and Laina Winfree of Smithville; and one sister, Peggy Richardson of Tullahoma.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Smithville Church of Christ Day School. They have also requested no food please.
Kathryn Ann Patterson Matuszewski

Kathryn Ann Patterson Matuszewski of Hendersonville and a native of DeKalb County, passed away Monday. Born April 25, 1940 to the late Joe Robert and Juanita Maxwell Patterson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Duane Patterson. Kathryn was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout Leader, enjoyed writing and wrote over 1,000 sonnetts. She was a member of the Hendersonville First Baptist Church for over 40 years and devoted housewife and mother. Ms. Kathryn leaves to cherish her memory, 2 children, Rhonda (James) Calhoun of Hendersonville, Randall Matuszewski of Goodlettsville; 2 grandchildren, Haydn Michelle Calhoun and Elizabeth Nichole Matuszewski; 2 brothers, Mack Patterson of Springfield and Kim Patterson of Murfreesboro; 1 sister, Judy Bakken of Greenbrier. Funeral services will be conducted 1 PM Saturday July 14, 2018 at the Hendersonville First Baptist Church Chapel with Bro. Ray Cleek officiating. Burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery at 3:30PM. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday 12 Noon until the time of the service at 1 PM at the Church chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Homebound

Phillip Maurice Moore

74 year old Phillip Maurice Moore of McMinnville passed away Monday at his residence. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a brick and block mason. A graveside service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Members of the family will officiate. No visitation will be held at the funeral home, only during the graveside service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Edward and Joanna Snow Moore. Survivors include two daughters, Heather Moore of McMinnville and Stacy and Alex Miller of Bradyville. Grandchildren, Seth Michael Grissom of Cookeville, Olivia Claire Grissom of McMinnville, Lacie and Kyle Baxter, Elaine and David Greer and Macy Miller all of Bradyville. Two great grandchildren. One sister, Yolanda and Tom Barry of Brentwood. Two brothers, Kenneth and Hazel Moore of Texas and Steve and Melissa Moore of Hendersonville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Ruby Hawkins Griffin

Mrs. Ruby Hawkins Griffin, age 89, (known to everyone as Mema) was born on March 25, 1929 to the late Clure and Nettie Hawkins. She went to be with her Lord on July 9, 2018.
She was a very long-time resident of the Belk Community of DeKalb County and lived the last few years in Rock Island.
Preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Clifton Griffin; one daughter, Jo Nell Hall; grandson, Steve Davis; brother, James Hawkins; and sons-in-law, Dan Griffin and Danny Davis.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home with burial to follow at the New Union Cemetery. Jason Brown and Trent Kell will officiate. Visitation with the Griffin family will be held on Wednesday at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home from 2 until 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m.
Survivors include daughters, Earlene Griffin of McMinnville, Maxine Davis of Hillsboro, and Penny and David Hankal and Lorie and Tim Wilcher of Rock Island. Seven grandchildren, Susan and Jeff Abbott, Stephanie and Scott Whitson, Joseph and April Hall, Sara Wilcher and Alex Saylor, Morgan and Shawnacey Wilcher, Taylor and Morgan Hankal, and Kristen and Zack Rowland. Fourteen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Two sisters, Opal Barlow of Sparta and Agnes Hutson of Doyle. A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

Jessica Lee Hobbs age 33 of Smithville, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 8, 2018 at St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital. She was born January 26, 1985 to her parents, Jerry Lee and Judy Hendrixson Johnson. Jessica was preceded in death by her grandparents, Wilson and Emm Lee Johnson, Carmon and Louise Hendrixson and Martha Caldwell. She worked at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital as a Radiographer/X-ray Technician and she loved animals. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Joshua Hobbs of Smithville; son, Bentlee Hobbs of Smithville; mother, Judy Johnson of Smithville; Father, Jerry “Buckwheat” Johnson of Smithville; brother, Chad Johnson of Smithville; 5 nieces and nephews, Brantley, Makira, Emma, Aspen and Carmon Johnson; special cousin, Trista Ashburn. Funeral services celebrating Jessica’s life will be 1 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Randy Gregory and Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday 11 AM until 8 PM and Wednesday 9 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Sue Ellis

Sue Ellis, age 70, currently of Paris, TX, and a longtime resident of Alexandria, TN, passed away quietly on Friday, July 6, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born March 3, 1948 in Nashville, TN to Jesse Edgar and Beulah Williams Greer.
Sue had several careers in her working life, having served as Dr. Cripps medical assistant for several years, then retired from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department. She also worked as a cosmetologist and as an Emergency Medical Technician at different times. Sue had many loves, her family most of all, her God, horses, and all kinds of animals. She enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband and if you knew her, she was kind and straight to the point!
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Elmer Lee Ellis, Jr., of Alexandria, TN; a daughter, Tammy (John) Harrington, of Paris, TX; a son, Jeff (Lynette) Ellis and children, Jordy Ellis, Jorjenna (Jemini) Chrisman, all of Silver Point, TN; a son, Jamie (Patty) Ellis and children, Jay Ellis & Kristen Ellis, all of Watertown, TN; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Braedyn, & Caisyn; a brother, Don (Carol) Greer, Goodlettsville, TN; sister, Becky Hobbs, Smithville, TN; as well as several nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Ellis are scheduled to be conducted from Avant Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 1PM. Interment will follow in the Hillview Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation with the Ellis Family will be at the Avant Funeral Home on Monday from 4PM until 8PM and again on Tuesday after 11AM until service time at 1PM.
