Lula Bell (Lue) Brown age 83 of Smithville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon, June 13, 2018 at St. Thomas West Hospital. She was born May 24, 1935 to her parents, the late Bailey W. and Martha P. Luna Judkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frenchie Elliott Brown; 1 grandson, Ronald Brown, II; 1 great-grandson, Nick Byrge; 1 sister, Violet Ray; 3 brothers, James Lee Judkins, William Henry Judkins and Clifford Bailey Judkins. Ms. Lue was a member of the New Union The Baptist Church, retired sales associate, member of the Smithville B&PW Club and was very involved with the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital Children’s Miracle Network. Funeral services for Ms. Lue Brown will be 11:AM Saturday, June 16, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Keith Sims officiating and burial will follow in Jefferson Cemetery. She leaves to cherish her memory, 5 children, Gary (Joann) Brown of Colorado Springs, CO, Ronald (Deborah) Brown of Smithville, Janice Smith Miller of Smithville; Larry (Julie) Brown of Smithville and Richard (Carol) Brown of Randallstown, MD; 10 grandchildren, Karen (Bart) Byrge, Connie (Jeff) Johnson, Angel (Tim) Miller, Anna (Josh) Miller, Christine (Darryl) Patterson, Rianna Brown, Jennifer (Charles) Ware, Shelly (Trevor) Castile, Ashley (Cole) Hawkins, Jason (Desiree) Brown; 18 great-grandchildren, Noah Byrge, Katie (Zach) Adams, Austin Agee, Eric Nichols, Mary Murray, Robert LoBello, Jr., Dominic Miller, Samuel Patterson, James Messina, Jesse Messina, Destiny Franklin, Wyatt Ware, McKenzie Brown, Braxton Davis, Rylan Castile, Ryleigh Hawkins, Sarah Hawkins, Suzan Grace Hawkins; 8 great-great-grandchildren, Willow, Paisley, Parker, Henry, William, Rashelle, Alethia and Aidan; extended family, Travis Nash, Emma Johnson, Timothy Miller, 2 nieces, 1 nephew and many cousins and other family whom she loved. In addition to flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in her memory. Visitation with the family will be on Friday 10 AM until 8 PM and Saturday 9 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Norma Gunter age 90 of Smithville, passed away Friday morning June 8, 2018 at the Webb House in Smithville. She was born August 22, 1927 to her parents, the late Clarence and Edna Cook Phillips. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gunter; son, Phillip Gunter; 2 brothers, Clarence Phillips, Jr and Bill Phillips. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church and a retired clothing salesperson. She leaves to cherish her memory, 2 children, Dan Gunter of Lakeland, FL and Sharon (Harold) Rader of Smithville; 5 grandchildren, Danielle Gunter and husband, Stig Thomsen, Monica and husband, Chris Dickens, Leah and husband, Eric Orsbon, Matt and wife, Thi Gunter and Alex Rader; 4 great-grandchildren, Brice and Drew Dickens, Auden and Ben Thomsen; 3 sisters, Jane Eller and Mary Cantrell Lawson both of Smithville and Faye Walker Campbell and husband, Don of McMinnville; sister-in-law, Fredia Phillips of Smithville; special friend, Lynda Gunter and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:PM Sunday, June 10, 2018 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. VL Baker officiating and burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. In addition to flowers, donations may be made to the Phillip Gunter Endowment at Valdosta State University, and those donations can be made at the funeral home. Kenneth Carter

A memorial service for Mr. Kenneth Carter, age 87 of Algood, will be held Saturday, June 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Algood United Methodist Church. Rev. Albert Willis will officiate. His cremated remains will be returned to the Carter Family Farm in DeKalb County at a later date.
Mr. Carter’s family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
Mr. Carter died Sunday morning, June 3, 2018 at Signature Healthcare of Putnam Co. in Algood.
He was born August 8, 1930 in the Temperance Hall community of Dekalb Co., TN to the late Charles Carter and Ocia Mason Carter. He attended Temperance Hall School and was a 1950 graduate of Gordonsville High School.
Kenneth is fondly remembered for his tireless work ethic, from early days on his family’s Grade A Dairy Farm, to his 17 years with Middle TN Natural Gas from which he retired in 1995. He was especially skilled at building fences on the farm and enjoyed bird hunting and working with horses. An avid gardener, he shared the majority of his crops with friends and neighbors. He loved to help people and joking with people.
He was a longtime member of Temperance Hall Methodist Church and has been a member of Algood United Methodist Church since moving to Algood in 2009. He continued to bring joy to people as he built many birdhouses for friends and neighbors and warmly greeted passer-bys from his front porch seat with a wave.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine McDonald and brother, John Mason Carter.
He is survived by his adoring family, his wife of 64 years, Nadene Rice Carter; son, Richard (Lucinda) Carter of DeKalb Co.; daughters, Karen (Terry) Foutch of Algood and Lisa Carter of Cookeville; grandchildren, Derek (Kelley) Carter, Kari Carter, Hillary Foutch, Olivia Foutch, Parker Foutch and Ella Jane Foutch; great grandchilren, Brayden Carter, Jace Carter, Kye Carter and Keeleigh Carter; and nephews, Byron (Pam) McDonald of Mt. Juliet and Mason Lee (Pam) Carter of Liberty, TN.

William Sterling “Bill” Popejoy, Jr.

William Sterling “Bill” Popejoy, Jr. age 55 of Smithville passed away Friday evening, June 1, 2018 in Murfreesboro form injuries received in a motorcycle accident. He was born May 21, 1963 to his parents, William S. and Ruth Moyers Popejoy. He was preceded in death his sister, Melody Escue. Bill was a construction worker. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Popejoy of Smyrna; sister, Lori (Gary) Anderson of Liberty; nephews, Gary Anderson, Jr. and Michael Anderson; companion, Valerie Laboe of Smithville; special extended family, Jason (Tosha) Stembridge and children, Brice and Cali Stembridge. Graveside services and interment will be 2 PM Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Anderson Cemetery in the Cottage Home Community of Liberty with Bro. Bernard Houk officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery for the graveside service at 2 PM. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

66 year old Virginia Kathleen (Kathy) Bain of Smithville passed away Friday at her residence. She was a member of Allen’s Chapel United Methodist Church and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Smithville NHC. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bro. Bobby Thomason will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 3:00 p.m. Mrs. Bain was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Headie Belle Johnson; a brother, Ronnie Johnson; and a step-daughter, Ann Colwell. Survivors include her husband, J. B. Bain; daughters, Wanda (David) Luna and Pam (David) Dawson; son, Roger (Vergie) Redmon; step-sons, Dennie Keith and Jerry (Pam) Redmon; sister-in-law, Jeanie Johnson; grandchildren, Heather Luna, Hollie Luna, Amanda McMinn, Cory Dawson, Brandi (Matthew) Cantrell, Brittany Redmon, Chase (Morgan) Keith, Chasity (A.J.) Dodder, Haley Keith, Jerry Redmon, Jr., Jason Keith, Dennie Keith, Jr., Shelbie Keith, Chad (Alecia) Colwell, Timmy (Debora) Colwell, Tracy Colwell, and Terra (Patrick) Cunningham. Several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Betty Frances Davis

Betty Frances Davis age 68 of Smithville passed away from this life, Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Bethesda Healthcare Center in Cookeville, Tn. Betty was born April 14, 1950 to the late Virgil Carl and Dorothy Willene Ford Davis. She graduated from DeKalb County High School in 1968. She was a graduate of MTSU in 1972 with a B.S. In 1991 she received her Masters Degree in Education. Betty taught at St. Jude School, a private Catholic school in Chattanooga for 25 years and Chattanooga School for Liberal Arts for 10 years. She worked 3 years with the Department of Human Services. Betty was a world traveler and an avid card player. She was a member of Elizabeth Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Smithville.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Willene Davis, a brother William Edgar Davis and a nephew B.J. Davis. She is survived by a brother, Carl Douglas Davis and wife Sandra of Smithville, nephews, Jacob Ray Davis and wife Dana of Dowelltown, Jared Tyler Davis and wife Kelli of Smithville, great nieces and newphew, Kendall, Kloe and Rhett Davis. Betty loved and cherished her family which was evident by her adventures with each of them.
Visitation with the Davis family will be Saturday 4M until 8M and on Sunday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Services will be conducted by Bro. Joel Wood, and interment in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
